I totally see your POV. and yep, I think we agreed on it before. It wouldn't be really easy to make it that succesful ,but it's possible, imo.

Oh yeah CHarmed. It's not very complex show, lol. But I used to watch it for some time, too. Awww, Drew Fuller. Yes, I liked him, but YES deffinitely he's on of those who I call chicken boy. But it's not in a bad way. I really liked him. But those guys while are really handsome, don't do anything for me. In a way, I don't pine for them and they don't make me feel dirty

Good morning dearest Cookie

Good morning (or evening, I guess it is?) yourself, Ms. helps!

CHICKEN boy?!!! CHICKEN?!!!! WHAT?!! That's it! You need a laundry water intervention!!!! You have to accept that you have a problem, as I recently
"did" with the M.D.D. That's the first step to recovery! Drew doesn't look like a chicken!!!! And if he doesn't do it for you, then. . . then . . . you're an alien!!! Kidding, of course. *shrug* He's no Misha or Jensen, but he certainly makes me feel sufficiently dirty, if we must phrase it that way! Teens these days . . . so lewd, no decorum or manners. Shame.

I don't think it'd be more popular if Sam and Dean were women. They had Charmed and that had very little fans. Plus, would'nt women be screaming or crying all the time like in Ghost whispher? I think it'd be more romance based instead of scary if they were girls.
I don't know if I would use the lesser success of Charmed as a way to predict whether or not a female version of Supernatural would do well. Charmed is a completely different show--it can't really be compared to Supernatural. Quite frankly, the quality of writing comes across as complete crap when compared to a show like Supernatural. I don't think it really had all that much to do with the fact the main characters were women. And, I must add, the show wasn't complete crap at first. I think it had a strong start, but then it got worse as it ran its course and more seasons were made.

If the women are running around screaming and crying, then it's the writer's problem, not the fact the main characters are women. People tend to heavily stereotype women and confine them to a more limited amount of options when it comes to what to do with their story lines and character development.

Was Charmed really that unsucessful? If so, why did it get 8 seasons?

I also thought that Charmed were quite popular. At least my classmates and some friends were watching them.
On the other hand 100% agree with candy. The fact that woman would be the main characters isn't the problem. I believe people would like it, but the problem is that there are no writers who would write woman more complex, not just like poor stupid vulnerable chicks who cry during an advert on stype.
Woman aren't like that, tho. Some of them might be, but it's like writers would use for the shows and movies only jerks-kind-of-men, but we all know that not all men are like that and the same goes for women.
Well, I suck in explanation, but candy wrote it greatly.

Compared to SPN, I wouldn't call it a successful show. I'm sure it had its fan base and all, but there certainly wasn't as strong of a following.

No, not all women sit around crying all day or get scared easily. That goes back to the whole women-are-in-need-of-being-saved thing. Men are the strong protectors, the ones who can carry their own and face danger bravely. Women, on the other hand, run around screaming, looking for a man to protect them and come up with a solution. This is just a stereotype, an over used one in the film and television business.

I tend to agree with you on this point though..... Once, many years ago, I had the 'pleasure' of having to sit awake thru a LONG four hour talk/lecture given by this 'brainy writer guy' on this very point!!! I work with children, as most of you know and it was on the back of this silly government debate at the time, that children were shown way too many of these types of stereotypes on either TV, movies or books etc... every single day of their lives, without respite! ....

Take for example... Fairy Stories.... Cinderella, Snow White, Repunzel etc...etc...etc.... all images of young stick thin pretty girls who were no doubt at all still virgins.... with mostly dead or absent mothers and deadbeat overweight fathers who most of the time, couldn't manage the whole childcare angle and used to sign their girls away to the nearest psycho step mother who always seemed to have slight murderous tendencies to her.... These step moms favourite attire was black outfits... dark.... heavy on the make up.... Cruella De Vil like.... ....

Modern kids movies still have these images about today....I still have nightmares to this very day about that 'Treasure Planet' cartoon, that then spiked this 40 min heated debate between the lecturer and the entire group of attendees, about just how small that cartoon womans waist was and how single mom of young lad in it was looking more decidedly haggard as the movie progressed.... almost like the woman was falling apart due to not being able to cope........

Yes folks, I do not joke here.... 4 HOURS this talk went on for.... whilst it was interesting for the first half hour maybe til the overall point was driven home that indeed all the girlies were seen as weak, extremely pretty soft natured virgins and the guys were all strapping princes who were all stuck to stallion saddles, whilst welding these enormous swords at dragons and excessively fast growing weeds, no make that killing plants..... Dad was bumbling dizzy brained man suffering from onset of alzheimers.... step mom was just pure evil... surrounded by smoke... then it only goes to show that if you are seeing these images as a kid so early in life and it is deemed acceptable by all... then what hope do adults have of still not seeing life with this same stereotypes???

Btw.... The motion was actually denied and put off for another few years, to totally ban these stories from all schools,Kindergartens, Preschools, Nurseries, Playgroups, etc....etc.... We were told to temporarily take all offending books off our bookshelves and only read nice simple books about fluffy kittens and so one to the kids.... I'm sure it was this nonsense that sparked off all these new range of PC books from the likes of Madonna and Sarah Ferguson etc....

Ok back to SPN and the whole 'what if Kripke created two Winchester sisters instead of what we see now!' .... I dunno, if even Kripke or indeed any of his brilliant team of writers... would not have also some of these stereotypes already in built in them too.... I mean, seriously.... as much as I love the show.... so far in the show to date...... how many of the lead female characters [or lead guys for that matter] have had any weight on them other then either pure manly muscle and/or a sized 0 waist? The girls are still all very pretty, ... etc.... It sells a show.... Of course it does.... but, women are so different and a lass with true physical strength is not always shaped just like that.....

I agree with Candy ... but I do think that before you even think of introducing this alternative scenario, you must first look at how you view the stereotypes....

I mostly agree with you about the portrayal of characters in kids' stories and Disney movies. Women are portrayed as weak and in need of being saved. The big dream is to be rescued by some handsome prince who will marry them. I don't know if I would call them sticks, though, because although their waists are abnormally small, the hips and busts are typically disproportionately large. I think I remember reading somewhere about how someone had done some sort of scale conversion and applied it to real women's measurements and then compared the two. The waist to hip/waist to bust ration was rather large. And I agree about the evil step mom and the neglectful father:there is a trend of reflecting their unfavorable character attributes through their appearances and the way they dress.

I actually like the actresses they chose for SPN. I can't speak for their sizes, but I hardly think they are a size zero. I think they look rather toned and athletic. Anyway, from my personal perspective, it's refreshing to see chicks on TV who are not all made up and not all tits, legs, and ass. They look like your everyday girl next door, instead of a bunch of pinup queens. I could easily picture them blending in with a crowd at the mall or wherever else. There does need to be more variety, though, and physical strength and femininity are not relegated to one specific type. Does anyone know how tall they are? I was just thinking it would be nice if shorter women were shown on TV. It seems like ( I could be wrong) the majority or at least over 5ft 5 in.
