Default 1.3 Dead in the water Episode Discussion

Dean learns about a mysterious drowning victim in Wisconsin, all related to a man named Billy Weston. The brothers Sam and Dean come to believe that a spirit is haunting the lake, causing this and other drownings. They discover that Billy and Steve Milton, the local sheriff, were in the Boy Scouts together, along with another child named Peter, who disappeared 35 years ago. Through prescient drawings made by Lucas, the son of the third victim, that Billy and Steve, both long time bullies, accidentally drowned Peter in the lake after school. After Lucas is lured into the lake by Peter and begins to drown, Steve jumps in, begging Peters forgiveness and to spare Lucas' life. Peter releases Lucas, who is saved by Dean and drowns Steve.

Lets discuss this Episode!

Well, I for one loved seeing Amy Acker as the guest star and we got to see Dean interact with a kid for the first time.

Oh no, I missspelled the Episode title, I must have Dean on my mind! Sorry!

And this is what your Mod is here for!!! All sorted!!

Hahahahahaha.... Pheonix, this was such a good idea of yours to start up these threads again... as I for one joined this show a year or two in and worked my way back so I missed these initial chats in th first place! So very happy to do them all now!!!

Ok... I actually watched this ep again, the other night... on Living TV... so it's still very much fresh in my mind... I must add though, that first time round, we didn't know the brothers well... we weren't as familiar with how the whole world of making a SPN ep works, so we just kept quiet and listened... we took as much in as we could, yet fully didn't understand the boys... it's so much easier now that we know the boys better then Kripke himself... the way thru all eps seems much clearer now...

So then ... off I go with my take on this one...

A bit of times passes, they are holed up in some hotel room... lost in the fact that Daddy is so lost, somehow the Journal is as much use as a chocolate teapot on this occasion... we mere mortals smile a bit... we could have maybe helped if those two gave us even the slightest glimpse of the darn book... but as they didn't... Daddy is still lost... and even though we don't at this stage know much about him, we are now starting to worry a bit!!! They are thinking of now enlisting the help of Scooby Doo & The Gang to find him, Sam has dozed off... Dean, now after totally giving up on the crossword in the paper is randomly circling newsworthy stuff... he is actively looking for some work to do... [others go thru the job section, for an ordinary blue collar 9-5 job but not our Dean... ] anyway... wheither a sleepy Sam wants to or not, he gets drawn into this case where a lake is seemingly currently eating whole all the people who swim in it... we watch in horror, as this young quite fit lass disappears under the water leaving no trace... it doesn't happen next door... so they have to drive a while to get there.... * I promise from next ep... I will know where these eps take place...*

For arguements sake here though... lets ummm pick.... Oklahoma... where the wind goes sweeping down the .... whatever... nice lakes there I'm sure.... anyway, they get there eventually... They are back to posing as agents... this time of the Wildlife variety... and start thinking Oklahoma's answer to the Loch Ness Monster!!!

They meet the local sheriff, let's call him Sheriff Moody, cause Lord above he isn't the happiest man in the area... in walks his daughter with her son who is unusually quiet for a kid... we are thankful for a bit... until we hear the kid saw something bad happen with his Daddy on the lake and he has lost his voice out of shock... Dean figures out the lass is now single and tries a few random pick up lines that involve directions and whatever... she pulls him up on it... he really isn't doing well with the ladies... we start feeling sorry for him... although we smirk at her fiestiness too!!! He does however become the kids new best friend... they do alot of crayoning together.... we all go ahhhhh... bless and wish Dean would train as a Kindergarten teacher... The kid draws him a picture of the home of the lass who just died in the lake.... I'm not so impressed cause the colouring is off a bit in the drawing ... different shades of red and all.... seems the kid is not so good aftr all... Dean ignores that fact though and looks impressed and quite pleased with his drawing...

Then we spin back to the Dad and brother of the newly dead girl, deep in mourning... Dad is on armchair avoiding the dinner, son has made for him... and the son has taken to washing up some dishes as a way to work thru his grief... [well, if it works... ] ... The sink fills up and tries to swallow him down the plughole... he, being very presistant keeps at that sink... making it his new life's mission to unplug it all... he then gets pulled under and is drowned.... Dad is near sucidal... Dean is quite puzzled over how a sink could eat a kid that size... he starts avoiding water at all costs... Dad then wanders out in a boat into the middle of the lake and dies by being also swallowed up by the lake... Sheriff arrives and gets a bit pissy with the boys and sends them packing.... they meet a tarmac covered crossroads and Dean, after being previously pulled on his poor sense of direction, makes a split quick decision as to which way to go... Sam starts to strop a bit over his choice... we look forward to seeing the boys first sibling fight...

Eventually, they start to work out that it is all down to some vengeful spirit of a young spotty red headed kid who was once drowned after rough play by the sheriff and the drowned siblings father... Sheriffs daughter, despite hearing all this news about killer sinks etc... decides that this is the most appropriate time to lock her bathroom door and take the longest lingering bubbly bath ever... The vengeful spirit is on to her... he waits til she's near dozed off in her tub and then tries to pull her down... Mute son has what looks to be either a panic attack or an asthma attack... and start futilely kicking down her door.... Dean, with the sensitive hearing of a bat from 100 miles away... somehow senses the kids fear ... and drives him and Sam to the house where he shields the kids eyes as a brilliant Sam saves her just in the nick of time....

They are all there in the house getting over the shock of the whole 'water is starting to kill me' issue... by not making a cup of tea as they fear the thing is now living in the kettle....

The mute boy starts to wander again... kicking a random spot in the ground much the same as Lassie did in all those movies when she was over a hidden mineshaft full of trapped kids... Dean and Sam then take shovels out of their pockets and start digging up the ground ... without premission, I must add here... but no matter... they find Misha's lost and broken bike... but no sign of Misha.... they look more worried then ever!!! We're ok, cause we know he made it and went on to further crash a car AND a internet site... We want to scream at the screen here... 'all is ok...' but it seems they both have already forgotten all about him, yes indeed that's how much he means to them... they have already moved on.....

The kid then draws more pics... with a similiar bike and the same red headed kid near it... they work out that the kid did die in the water and was left there to rot, so therefore they have no body to dig up, salt and burn.... they actually look really disappointed... we start to think that Dean is a dab hand at it all... but anyway... back to story...

Then the mute kid wanders off again... despite being told to 'be good!!!'... Damn kids... even when they are silent, they're trouble!!! He jumps into the lake... he starts to go under the water... Mom starts to scream a bit.... Dean & Sam jump in and do lots of .... 'Look at us, we are trying to save your kid here!!!' etc...

Meanwhile Grandpa Sheriff turns up and decides to wander into the water too.... demanding the spirit take him instead... after a minute or two of Sam having givien up the quest to save the kid, Grandpa is dead and gone well under... and shock horror... Dean appears all sexily with kid in hands... We applaud our hero... damn the kids still breathing... better luck next time Dean...

We then spin forward to a house full of dry alive people and out the boys pop to the car to drive off ... up comes grateful Mom with the kid previously known as the 'mute one' who is now in flying form... seriously can't shut the kid up now... he thrusts a plateful of food, made by Mom... under Deans nose for the journey... we start to think does this mother actually think she is feeding two boys with stomachs half the size of her own kid's? The plate although a bit on the tiny side is very much welcomed and is almost fired like a frisbee into the back seat of the Impala... we don't sadly find out whether it ended up in an upright position or upsidedown or if it were spread and leaked out all across the back seat... we wait with much excitement and anticipation to see whether next ep makes any reference at all to a strong smell of egg mayo or tuna sandwiches etc... and silently pray it doesn't!!!

And that's pretty much it.... All good at the end....

Cue the credits with the now familiar music to which we are now all firmly singing along to!!!

That was the first ep I actually really liked. I loved the way Dean connected to the boy, I loved seeing Amy Acker and absolutely loved the Stephen King-esque storyline.

My friend R., after watching this ep, not quite convinced it was a show worth his time yet, called me an said he wasn't fond of the Knight Rider/Highway to Heaven like ending. You know, where they stand on the road beside the car at the end of the episode and make the final joke before taking off. He has a point. Thankfully that doesn't happen very often through the series.

I agree... Dean does rather have this really bad habit of leaning over the roof of the car at end of each ep.. saying a bit and then getting in... it is real 80's like... good spot there, Girl!!!!

It is 80s, but that's totally ok for the kind of show SPN is, and I really don't mind it. It's a bit cheesy when it's saying good bye to the saved damsels in distress, but damsel-less the brother talking about what happened I have no problem with it at all.

I forget saying I remember Dead in the Water fondly for being the ep after which every ep of SPN simply got better than the one before (ok, with very few exceptions)

I can't wait until we get to discuss Scarecrow and Faith! I started watching SPN after the first 2 season had already aired, so I never got to do the ep by ep discussion thing for S1&2 like I did for S3&4. Great idea to do so in the last weeks of that damned to hell summer break! I wish I could re-watch the eps before commenting on them, but a certain someone is hogging my DVD sets, and I have no Living-TV.

I liked Scarecrow... but wasn't that gone at all on Faith... however, it remains to this day strangely one of Mini Me's favourite eps of the show to date.... That's one he keeps wanting to watch again and again....

Faith gets 10 out of 10 from me. Mini you has excellent taste. I also love Croatoan, and R. did too, like I knew he would. I can't understand why you can't see the genius in these eps!

I'll say more stuff later, maybe, but for now I just want to say that J2 are awesome divers! Impressive! I can't dive. I never could learn. I always pull up at the last moment because I'm scared of bashing my head on the bottom. I've always wished I could dive so I'm impressed by those who can; esp. those who do it so well.

Oh, Calena, here's something for us NOT to debate about! "Faith" was my favorite ep. of all until "Mystery Spot" showed up! Fantastic ep.! Dean was dramatic, Sammy was precious.

Ohhh that debate will be good then as as an ep, I really didn't like it at all.... LOL!

Diving... I can swim, but sadly...I can't dive... and have never had the opportunity to . I'm not allowed to do it vigorously as I broke my back many years ago and although it's in the best shape ever, It's still on my list of random 'never do' things... Quite sadly, because I truly would love to do it... I really envied my sister a few months back when she learned how to scuba dive in some waters in Australia... I would love to do the whole swim in friendly shark/dolphin waters etc...

Well, it's not THE fave ep for me, but one of them. Some other 10s in my book are Jus in Bello, Monster at the End of the Book, and Croatoan.
Right now my very fave ep is MatEotB, for its sheer boldness and willingness to communicate with the fans.
