Personally I think he's finally got to the point he realizes that sometimes there will be casualties, and as bad as it is to say it, there is nothing anyone can do to change that. He's lost his mother, girlfriend, father, and now is facing losing the only thing/one he has left - Dean. He probably feels that if this situation is going to take Dean, he will do whatever he has to do to try and keep Dean. It's that damned Winchester stubburn streak, he's not going to give up without a fight. Just my opinion...

i been thinking, that sam's visions/powers were coming not from a darkside but more like an arcangel's perspective. & WITH THE YE DEMON KNOWING THIS, TRIED TO TAINT SAM, IN THE PILOT, WITH HIS BLOOD, SORT OF HOW LUCIFER CAME TO BE, FALLEN ANGEL. SAM'S SUPPOSED PUPPETEER?? & IM REALLY HOPING SAM COMING BACK FROM THE DEAD, WAS SOME KIND OF ESP UPGRADE, LEARNING HE IS ACTUALLY THE MESSIAH (HOUSES OF THE HOLY)TO SAVE THE WORLD. HAS A REVELATION ON HOW TO SAVE DEAN. TELLS DEAN WE WERE MEANT TO DO THIS (& AS USUAL SAM QUESTONS, HIS SANITY) WITH TWISTS & TURNS & SH*T ALONG THE WAY.ID LIKE TO SEE IT GO IN THAT DIRECTION. & OF COURSE SAM BATTLING IMPURE THOUGHTS & ACTIONS COMING BACK FROM THE DEAD

I have always felt that Sam's powers came from good not evil. I think that because Missouri said in the Episode Home....that Sam had such great powers is a sign that from birth he was maybe going to fight against evil...so the YED gave him demonic blood to slowly turn him into the dark side. I used to think that Mary was like a half human half angel who fell in love with a mortal John Winchester. But with Kripke not wanting to show the other side of the WAR between good and evil...and only focusing on the demonic side....I now wonder if Mary was a witch ? Now everyone want's to know why and how did Mary know the YED? I thought that what if the YED had come after Dean when he was like 6 months old....but Mary had prevented the YED into taking over baby Dean with his demonic blood. Then the second time fearing for baby Sam , Mary was ready....but so was the YED ,who the second time took her life.

I don't think that there is something wrong with Sam....but that could change, considering that Sam does have demon blood growing inside him . I also feel that Sam is going to and that he always will need Dean. Dean raised Sam and took care of his DAD when John would come back from a hunt. Dean told Sam that he will survive without him....but I think that if Dean's contract isn't broken ...and Dean goes to hell that Sam will then be controlled by evil. Dean's contract was in my opinion a trap to put Dean away from Sammy.

The demon killed Mary...who would have been the closest person to Sam if she had lived . Then he killed JOHN who was getting too close to the truth. He also terminated Jessica when she got too close to Sam in college. And now the only one standing in the way is Dean....since according to Ruby all of Mary's family and nearest friends are dead....killed off by the demons.

I honestly think that the whole series of supernatural will end in a duel between dean and sam. Only because Sam was supposed to be evil and lead the demons into the war and there always has to be a moajor conflict. The bond between them makes me think that they will end up on diffrent sides and facing eachother in the end.JUst my opinion though don't take it too much into context.

I am firmly convinced that "Sam came back wrong" is a Big Fat Red Herring. Firstly, there's no reason for Sam to have come back wrong. If that were the case, it means that Crossroads Deam f-ed up his resurrection, which means there's grounds for Dean to challenge CD's boss's claim to Dean's soul. Secondly, "Sam came back wrong" is a cop-out. It's just plain bad storytelling for a character to be retconned out of responsibility for their actions.

Thirdly, short of outright possession or something of equivalent, free will has always been shown as existing in the Supernatural-verse. That is, Sam can't just be made different -- his nature can't be changed. Sam is who he is as a product of his choices made through free will, although there might be coercion, persuasion, trickery, and so on involved with those choices. Go back to how of the psychics were presented in the first season. None of them "turned evil". In fact, the presentation of Scott in "Hunted" made it clear that no matter what the psychic's destinys might be, they couldn't be made to "turn evil". They had to be manipulated or bribed or whatnot. I believe, then, that it's the same thing with Sam post-resurrection.

Fourthly, while Sam's more recent actions are not what he would have once done, they are perfectly consistant with what has happened to him. A lot has happened to Sam since the series began, and he's beginning to react to that, hence his more recent ruthless actions. My prediction? Sam will go down a dark path as soon as the writers' strike is over not because he came back wrong but because he will see it as the only way to save Dean.

I agree with BJXMAS. I think that Sam is quicker on the draw now because in letting Jake live it cost him his life and his brother's. He's finally accepted the fact that being a "nice" guy is a luxury in the supernatural world that he can no longer afford. As for Sam's powers, I never believed that they were given to him by the demon. I think he was born with them. Remember Rosie in Salvation? Her mom said she was such a quiet baby and looked at you like she could read your mind. That was before the demon tried to get to her. I think Sam was the same. I also agree with PADACKELS that the demon blood may have been given to Sam in an attempt to turn him to the dark side. I also think the blood effected the visions. Kept them at bay until the YED was ready for Sam to start having them. I think the visions will eventually return. As for the deal Dean made - it's my fear that ultimately the only way out will be for Sam to agree to lead the demon army to save his brother. While I found evil
