It boils down to the fact that Dean is simply a hero, but not a boring Luke Skywalker type one - which is in part due to the humour. You are also right about the looking out part, wouldn't everyone love to have a Dean to care so much for them? I also feel for him, having had to carry the burden of "look out for Sammy" and having had such a hard time to live up to his dad's expectations. Plus he has awesome taste in music.
I agree with you on this one. I love Dean and yes he is good looking but that is not what drew me to him. He cares about Sam so much and would do anything to protect him. He gave up his sole so that he can live. How many siblings would do that?

Did you get the impression that we are superficial fans who just like Dean cause he's hot?

Oh, no way! Sure Deans hot, but I was talking about all the dumb fans who throw their underwear onstage and stuff like that...you don't do that... right? You're right, I totally think that one of the character's redeeming qualities his the fact that he connects with the audience via his responsibility to Sam.

Absolutely right! I think it's great that Kripke can create a show where there's gore and monsters and still manage to have characters that support things like family taking care of family. Although, with this darker side of Sam coming up in S4, not sure how that's going to affect that aspect.

Well I haven't managed to get near a stage with Jensen on it so far, so who knows... No, I think I could contain myself.
Why does Dean need redeeming?

Any character that is created needs a redeeming quality (a.k.a. a connecting point with the audience) or the character is a flop. For instance, Bela - the actress herself is a great actress, but the character had very little redeeming quality (per the audience) and therefore her part was written out of the show. Dean's character has SO many redeeming qualities...it's different than having to be redeemed per say in real life. That make any sense?

Hell... Smiley's just superficial..... Nothing at all going on upstairs.... Completely doing all the thinking with the wrong brain....

I agree with points made by both of you.... I liked Bela character, but as a character, you are right, she did very little if anything at all to endear herself to anyone.... Dean has got many more endearing qualities that make him a more popular character regardless of what he actually looks like! Although, how he looks is obviously a bonus...

I am always going to be a fan of Master Kripke... I feel his attention to detail and work to such a high standard, pretty much settles in my mind that he won't let us down with this story, no matter what way he takes it.... Good, bad or whatever.... He will cover it all well!
Honestly, for me... I particularly like the way his SPN stories can be understood by all ages... My house, theres me, mid thirties... fan of horror flicks, not a stranger to good shows or the TV... and then there my little mini me, 9 in a matter of days.... totally obsessed with the show... new role model... Dean and most times Sam.... Lover of the damn car.... I can honestly say I have never seen him this excited over a show in his entire life... Other then maybe Barney the Dinosaur.... That was played on loop constantly for a whole year straight at one stage.... It nearly drove me demented!!!!

But with this show, from a parental POV... I know, due to the fact of him having a close relationship with a friend of mine who did stunt work for a while in some movies, the fact that he studies drama in school etc... and for his overall love of film, TV shows etc.. both in front and behind the scenes... His understanding of this show is quite good!
The show never steps over the mark into ummm.... wrong phrase coming here but you'll get the gist.... umm... maybe rudeness, etc... As much as we girlies would like an endless stream of naked Sam & Dean... It doesn't overstep that... Love scenes are minimally done... just enough to add what is needed to the story... I also don't have to worry about having to have AJ avoid an endless steam of expletives... It's kind of refreshing to see a show that doesn't rely on it on a whole anyway...

Got to go... down to pub now... will finish this Smiley train of thought later....

Be good all....

Later Gators....

Yep it does.
Another thing that makes the character Dean so great imo is, that he not only cares for his familiy, but for strangers, too. He likes hunting, which is essentially doing good, it is not only the job he was born into by accident, it's his vocation and he was never reluctant to step up, as opposed to Sam or even John, who did it for revenge and out of necessity. Therefore it didn't bother me at all that Dean wasn't tied into the mythology so far. Sam might be the chosen one, the Campellian hero, but that Dean wasn't chosen as much as he did choose this life (in "What is and never ..., for example) makes him not an ounce less interesting. Dean cares so much about strangers that he is willing to sacrifice a lot for them (having a familiy, for example) the only thing he won't and can't tolerate is not having Sam by his side (as opposed to having him safe in Stanford). Dean is the good guy, period.

Absolutely, Kripke is not going to disappoint for sure. I am also no stranger to TV, but I like a show that's got more to it than sex and cussing, and honestly Kripke has done a great job of keeping a great show clean. I love some gore and monsters, and he does a really great job with those too. Honestly, especially with the budget they're on, the whole team does a really good job.

I really like the way this is going, the change in the subjet . I mean, for me, Dean is hot, of course, but I have to make a confesion (Jensen Fan, I'm one of you, so please, don't kill me!) but when I started watching the show, honestly, I didn't find Jensen hot, or even atractive, but did find Dean a very interesting guy. Jensen kind of grow on me along with the story. Not only the way he cares for Sam and for others, but the way he deals with everything, how he manages to face pain, fear, sadness. It makes you want to be there for him, and have him watching over you for ever!!!

That's what you would have us believe, but I know better. Your brilliant analysis of why we call Master Kripke "Master" is proof enough.

I'm absolutely with you on that one.
This pic just makes me want to wrap my arms around him and comfort him, it conveys so much emotion:

I also wasn't a Dean girl right from the start, it took me until Scarecrow to absolutely fall for him. What did it was the comment about Sam's puppy dog eyes and how the couple that was about to be sacrificed would absolutely believe him, I felt so sorry for Dean. And of course "I hope your apple pie is freaking worth it", the way Jensen delivered this line with so much disdain and despair was just awesome.
IDK, is Jensen what's considered typically hot, more so than Jared? I certainly love Jensen's jawline and his smile, but I love Jared's smile too. I think a big amount of fan craziness for Jensen comes from the Dean character and Jensen must know that and it has to feel weird that people love you, because they think you are someone else.
