In a shocking, completely unexpected move, the creators of Smallville, Al Gough and Miles Millar, have quit the series. In a letter that was released to the press today, the executive producers announced their departure, which will be effective at the end of the current season. In the letter, they mentioned that they were happy to look back at "seven amazing years" and 152 episodes, but added in that, "After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on." Other than that, there was no concrete reason given for the move, forcing fans to have to read between the lines. To read the rest, click here.

I can't understand why the creators of Smallville are leaving the series when season 8 was just confirmed and it has to tie up the loose ends so that Clark Kent can turn into Superman. Boy, I hope season 8 doesn't suffer that much and that it will still have strong storylines and good action sequences. I wonder if it has to do with some of the actors and/or actresses leaving the show after season 7 finishes this year.

I wonder if it has to do with some of the actors and/or actresses leaving the show after season 7 finishes this year. It is kind of understandable though. Some of the show's main stars won't be returning for a new season. Maybe the producers decided to end it rather than watch Smallville suffer and lose ratings like so many shows before them

Holy cow, that was totally out of left field! When I read the article email my irst thought was What, why?!? And then I thought that it might be a late April Fool's joke, but then I realized they wouldn't have done it so late or something so massive as a prank, because they'd anger too many people. Now I've heard that some of the actors won't stick around through the next season, but who that is has been a bit shady for me - anyone know for sure? I don't knwo if that would be why the creators are leaving, though I'm sure there's moe to it if it is... well I hope you two succeed in whatever else you take on, and thanks for creating such a great show.

Even if cast members wanted to leave, contracts are contracts and will have to be honored. However, nothing is worse than watching an actor go through a season with the obvious sense that they don't want to be there, so hopefully that won't happen.

I do want Smallville to finish with a bang having Clark Kent finally become a news reporter for The Daily Planet and fight evil and Superman they need to find to great and fantastic new creator writers Al Gough and Miles Millar will be missed, let's pray that new writing talent can come to finish Smallville off with a great story for Season 8.

i think that smallville will suffer in ratings and viewers since the departure of cough and miller but it is time for new writers and to see where they take it. maybe just maybe we'll get to see superman end up with lois and (a big and) we'll see clark kent in his superhero outfit!

smallville has no doubt been an amazing show through all 7 seasons and Cough& Miller will greatly be missed, but I for one will not stop watching just because of this. they better end the show well when they do, i think when they do officialy end it clark should meet up with oliver Queen &Co. seeing him in his superman suit may be a tad bit cheesy, but depends how they do it, they should have him looking at it or something not have it actually on. but hope it doesnt end for a while yet!

Wow, crazy. There has to be more to this story, probably some major flare-ups with studio. But let's hold off on the Gilmore comparisons. ASP had such a unique take and writing style. I'm sure these guys are good, but honestly, I've heard soooo many complaints from you fans about the direction the show has been taking that maybe new leaders will bring some fresh blood. I'll be very interested. It will be interesting to see who takes on these showrunning dsuties. Ideally, it will be a Buffy alum.
