Default 'Chun-Li' kicks high but falls flat in theater

Kristen Kreuk of "Smallville 1-7 box set" plays Chun Li as she fights the members of a crime syndicate to reach the corrupt leader Mike Bison (Neal McDonough) in the action packed "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li."

The movie is an adaptation from the video game series "Street Fighter."

Li appeared in the second installment and was the first playable woman character to be placed in a video game.

Li departs on a quest to free her kidnapped father and obtain justice by vanquishing her enemies after accepting a hint from the leader of a group known as the Web.

She devotedly fights her way to Bison using skills acquired over a lifetime of practice.

The film is characterized by the overall terrible script and acting accompanying the story. Mistakes such as mispronouncing of the name Ryu at the end of the film and terrible one-liners are commonplace.

The ensuing fight scenes are well done in contrast to the awful story line. Kreuk utilizes her surroundings and floats around the screen to defeat large weapon-wielding henchmen in a blend of creativity and supernatural yet fluid and organic motion.

The film does have some minor star power attached too.

Li's nemeses are played by actors such as rapper Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, playing the masked fighter Vega.

Michael Duncan plays the sinister boxer Balrog, and Neal McDonough, who played Captain Severance in "Flags of Our Fathers" and takes on the role of Bison.

Many of her opponents were characters in the video game series. Bison, Vega, and Balrog appear in both the game and film adaptation as members of a dangerous Bangkok crime syndicate.

Underlying the action and plot are themes of peace, justice and generosity.

Overall, Andrzej Bartkowiak has taken a minor plot device from the famous video game series and helmed an 88-minute action packed battle with a less than perfect script.

Well-choreographed fight scenes breathe life into a film that would otherwise be characterized by a terrible script and flawed acting.

The film ends inviting a sequel. Gen mentions the need to recruit Ryu to the Web through the Street Fighter Tournament after Li's quest ends. Even fans of kung-fu action flicks will want to consider carefully the ticket cost.
