I see Chloe as the former and Lana as the latter. Of course this is just from how they have been portrayed: Chloe is usually heroic, sacrifices her happiness for others, saves the hero a number of times, assists the hero in everything he's doing and so on. Almost similar to Clark in that Clark sacrifices his happiness for the sake of others (except now that he's sitting in eternal bliss as Ollie pointed out), is always heroic. Now of course Clark being the main hero of the story so there are all the other things like he's always there to save the day and every other character is there to serve his story and so on. The thing with Chlois is that it would make some of the things make sense: The "Fever" letter for example: "I'm the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend" and "..are two kinds of girls, the ones you grow out of, the ones you grow into, I really hope I'm the latter" and basically most of that letter.

It's interesting to note that, that episode "Fever" was written by Al/Miles themselves, the producers of the show, which means they also wrote that letter. Now if they just wrote for the sake without any pay-back in the end, I think it would suck, why have Chloe read such a soulful letter at the beginning if it will never come to pass? Especially since that letter contains so many "Superman" anvils: (ex. Fly back to me, disguise is so thin, of your dreams masquerading as your best friend--- Lois/Supes/Clark: In the Superman mythos, Clark is Lois' best friend but he is also the boy of Lois' dreams (Superman) because Lois was in love with Superman but had not seen through Clark Kent's "thin disguise" of glasses).) Anyways, the anvils are laid along the way since season 1 with the "intrepid reporter" name that Chloe is given in the "Pilot".

From then on, they worked on first creating a conflict between Clark and Chloe: Chloe betraying Clark and so on, and they resolved the conflict, and then worked on bringing these two closer and closer and closer together to a point where if you have never seen the show and then you watch season 5 or season 6 you would think Chloe and Clark and in a relationship and not Lana and Clark. Even after they brought in a Lois Lane, they still worked on keeping the Chlark relationship closer than before leading to the "Vessel" kiss. Of course they got a season six and decided to stall everyone's destiny again (Clark was more superman-like in season 5 than ever before) and Chloe was more Iconic Lois Lane (ILL) in season 1-5 than in season 6. Season six again started with Clark being interested in Chloe, and they even made a point of officially making Clark/Chloe/Jimmy another triangle.

Clark was jealous of Jimmy, and Jimmy was jealous of Clark and I am almost a 100% sure that if season six was the last season we would have had a Chlark non-platonic relationship. They even went as far as showing us that even in an alternate universe with a very strong phantom controlling everyone else, Chloe's will and loyalty could not be altered. It's amazing to note that the phantom was able to even alter Clark's mom in "Labyrinth", but could not alter Chloe. Chloe still believed in Clark, still stood by him and even saved him to the extent that she had to die for Clark to give up fighting. To me, the show has basically gone out of it's way to show us why Chloe is so unique in Clark's life, and I would find it really hard to believe that the show has done this with the intent of killing her off in the end. Sorry about the long posts? I'm not sure why I always end up writing novels Mxlpdilk.

Oh, one last thing (I promise) this is Smallville, so I won't be surprised if they decide they do not care about good story-telling and just kill Chloe off, have Clark forget her by the following episode and end the show with Clark and Lana sitting blissfully on the couch, staring into each others eyes with googly-doe-eyes with Lana whispering "I'll always love you"-- with everyone else: Lex, Lois, Jimmy, Kara, Martha forgotten in offscreenville! This is smallville afterall, where Lana "Rocks"! Slayfan I love your ending! I really, really, really hope that's how it ends! Although on a selfish note; I would like a few alterations, hehe

and then the scene after that we see Clark and Chloe on the roof of the Daily Planet kissing (hey, I said selfishly) right before Clark flies off into the sunset with Chloe (Chlois in this case) staring at him and the camera zooms on Clark flying and then he disappears into the sunset and well Fade to Black! That's my kinda ending (if there was a way to have Chloe in Clark's arms flying, hey I'd take that too hehe, but since it's Clark's and Lex's story, I'm all for a final shot of just Clark once he leaves Chloe on the roof of the Daily Planet).

CORRECTION: Small correction. I wrote that "Fever" was written by the producers Al/Miles-- I meant by the executive editors and one extra writer

Cecil, WOW!! You have really given this some thought and I congratulate you on some great thoughts and details. Time will tell whether you are right, or rather whether the producers decide to go the same way you would. You make a very good case that Chloe is closest to Clark and that does motivate the Chlois solution to some degree. In fact they have gone out of their way to make clear she knows him best, as you have shown many times. I don't think that means she can't die for him, however, or that it would make bad storytelling if she does. For one thing if it took her 18 hours to recover from saving Lex, and that was an increase of whatever percent from her previous save, how much would her recovery time increase due to not only the fact that it takes longer every time but also that bringing a Kryptonian back to life might take more than bringing back a human? I think it is likely it would just be too much for her human heart, even if it is meteor powered. But it is also poss
