The Real World used to be about more than a bunch of 20-somethings, without direction, who liked to party and hook up with each other. Once upon a time, they dealt with social issues such as race, religion, and sexuality. These days, most scenes for the MTV reality show are filmed in the bar or the bedroom. The fights are bigger, the meltdowns are scarier, and the booze is always flowing while cameras wait to capture a television worthy moment. With so much debauchery to be had in Hollywood, why did MTV choose to cast not one, but two former addicts on their show this season?

Yeah I totally agree. The Real World has gotten ridiculous. It's not safe to put people like that in this type of situation, although they did choose to enter into the house fully knowing what they would be surrounded by. But I miss the days when they had casts like Seattle. I wish they would go back to that!

I completely agree. And I honestly question whether it is indeed reality or not anymore. Could it be like the Hills....Scripted? What happened to the cultural diversity and the people you could relate to? This wouldn't be the first time we've seen people with addictions problems on the show...But I seem to recall actually feeling for the people who went through this many seasons past. Since the Vegas season, it's just been the same thing over and over and over. The exact same kinds of people, the same arguments, the same fights. There's no culture or social intelligence left to the show. Which is extremely unfortunate because this show broke a lot of boundaries back in the day. It's a shame to see it turn into such utter crap.

One word, ratings. How interesting would it be to watch people who got along all the time and hung out (not very). The Real World isn't like most reality shows where the cast members actually do something and have missions that they need to accomplish. In those shows, the fighting and hooking up is just an added benefit. But on the Real World, that IS the show. I also think that the producers want to be on TV so they have these ppl come in, act all crazy and need their help so they can get some on screen time telling them to go to rehab. Remember Ruthie from Hawaii?

I don't think anybody anticipated Ruthie and that's why it was such a shock. It's sad that anyone would want to recreate her storyline but with other people. And Trip makes a good point, Vegas really IS where things started to turn for the show.
