Oh I dunno... those of you old enough to remember all the 80's classics.... The A Team... The Incredible Hulk... Hart To Hart.... Fame [the High School Musical of the day], The Waltons... Little House On The Prairie... Knight Rider... The Six Million Dollar Man & Woman, Wonder Woman, Charlies Angels...etc...etc... etc.... would maybe say there was a time when these shows ruled our worlds!!! I was a real big Waltons fan when I was a kid.... Wholesome mush served up on a giant ladle.... And as for LHOTP... Well Life just came to a complete standstill in Smiley's house when Pa Ingall took out that old fiddle and played a tune!!!
Please tell me at least one of you remembers them.....

Lila, keep going with The Shield. Trust me, though it seems like it, the show never forgets that, at his core, Vic Mackey is a bad guy (he killed a fellow cop in the first episode, for Pete's sake). I won't spoil anything, but look out for: Aceveda and the camera phone (you'll know when you see it), and the arrivals of Anthony Anderson, Glenn Close and Forest Whitaker. The fifth season finale, titled "Post Partum," features the single greatest scene of dialogue I've ever witnessed on TV.

And I agree also: nothing will ever top The Wire. And yes, I suppose I have overlooked some major problems with BSG. But for season 3, the first four and the last four episodes are so good that it's easy to forget the middle.

To me the current best shows are Prison Break, Lost, Heroes and House.

However, my best shows EVER are Stargate SG-1 and The X-Files.

I didn't watch very much of Waltons, but I was hooked on LHOTP. Did you noticed how it always was raining when something sad happened? And only then?
I wouldn't call it best show ever, though!

For me it has to be, off the top of my head, in no particular order -

Black Books

Extras

Shameless

Skins

Extras is brilliant. Great choice. Though if we're going "current," it's already wrapped up. As is The Wire.

Yeah... It did always rain when they were sad... same as it absolutely thundered from the very Heavens each time they had to go out in to the woods to look for a lost child or animal... etc..... I always did like the way that Pa Ingalls very hairy mate used to come in from the rain.... beard sapping ... dripping raindrops everywhere....

Oh I sooooooo loved that show..... layered with coats of thick sugar.... was that show!!! Pah Girl... shame on you... missing out on the Waltons... you thought LHOTP was sweet on the family values.... and I bet you liked 'Highway To Heaven' too!!!

My favorite show ever (at this point in my life, that is) would have to be LOST.
(SciFi channel)Battlestar Galactica and The Office would be close runners-up.

If Firefly had continued, it may very well have trumped LOST in my top spot. There just weren't enought episodes to come to that conclusion, however.
