Default 11/23/07 Writers' Strike

The writers and producers are heading back to the negotiating table on Monday. What are your opinions on the writers' strike? What do you want to see happen? Why?

I want the writers to get their fair share and the the strike to be over.
Why? Because I want my full third season of Prison Break, I want the new season of Lost, I want Supernatural to continue and even though I've only seen the first season I don't want 24 being postponed to 2009.

I fully support the writers. Studios make so much money but they don't dole it out to the creative minds behind the production of their money making shows. I want the writers to get their fair share. I support the writers, but I must admit I really do hope this strike resolves itself quickly. You're talking about thousands of people being out jobs right now. Not just the writers, but the ton people who work on the shows too (gripes, PAs, runners, ect). Many of these people will get paid until the end of the year, but after that they will be out jobs. These people have mortgages and kids to feed just like everyone else.

BTW Remember to not stream the shows from the network sites if you support the writers (with the exception of that Lost thing). Writers recieve no money from this streams (even though there are commercial interuptions so that means they are making money off you watching).

Though I was raised in a union family (any other utility workers union members out there?) I rarely fully agree with the unions on strike. I have a basic support for them, but don't agree. In this case, I honestly don't see that the writers are asking for too much. Even some of my friends that are not fans of unions think this is just stupid.

All they want is money that is rightfully theirs. They aren't even saying that if you post my stuff on the internet, or on cell phones or whatever, I want money. They are saying if you make money off those posting, I want a percentage. I haven't heard any exact amounts, but I have heard its a fairly small amount. I think under 10%. 10% of $100,000 is only $1,000, I hardly think that is going to bankrupt a studio. Oh and they want what like 4 cents more per dvd. Big freakin deal. I don't know much about this industry, but i'm surprised they are not asking for more. And if it were not for the non union people that will be hurt by this, I would hope this strike lasts a while. Sure I will miss my tv, but I can get over it. heck maybe I could go out into the real world and get a life! haha

If you want to truly support the writers, there are things you can do. The first obviously don't watch any streamed videos for the time being. And the second, is to write to the sponsors of the shows and networks you watch. Tell them as long as they sponsor this show/network, and as long as the writers do not get what they want, you will not support their company. If enough people do this, it will send a message. This being the prime shopping season, if we could get a large portion of people to write in, and commit to this, it could make a serious impact. Now i'm sure it wil never happen, but its stil the best thing we can do.

Just an FYI right now on DVD sales, writers get a third of a cent for every dollar. So every three dollars spent they earn a penny.

Even the increase on DVD sales they took off the table right before the strike and were only asking for risiduals on new media, the stuff streamed online that the networks ARE making money off of (or there wouldn't be commericals or a price tag).

I support the writers 100%!
Why? Because without them we wouldn't have scripts, and without scripts we wouldn't have TV Shows!
And mainly because I want a full season of LOST, Prison Break, Heroes, and Desperate Housewives! :P

The writers are asking for a percentage. I don't think that's too much to ask. Although I haven't heard anything from the Producers/Production companies, I wish we would hear what they're offering and why they think the writers are asking for too much. I'm glad they are going back to the table. I hope they settle this thing soon. While they are on strike, the writers get strike pay from the union, but the peons aren't getting anything. Those are the people I really feel for right now during the holidays.

The networks want no extra on the DVDs and they'll pay writers a small percentage on online tv AFTER its airred for 6 weeks (you know, the time when most people would be interested in watching it) because they says its for promotional purposes, but of course they're making money off it since there are commerical breaks intergrated into them.

So basically they don't want to give the writers anything.

withut them there are no good shows
te networks should make an agreement IMO, its only fair that the writers get what they are entitled to and are shown to be aprecaited for the work that they do
although hope they make an agrement soon, ill miss my shows
