Need Help!

Hey guys. Because you are all so awesome at doing your sigs and stuff I am again asking for help!!! I don't have photoshop but I have a similar graphics program and I'm in the process of making a new sig. Just wondering how you can make your pastes look slightly transparent so you can see the background pics???? I'm sure most of the programs are pretty similiar and I know you guys use PS but I have no idea where to look as far as effects go.
