Nick, I'm sure it's exciting AND terrifying about right now. I just wanted to take a moment to remind you to enjoy the coming weeks. Remember where you have come from, the chances you took in faith, the sacrifices that you and your family made and look at you now! An author!

You've boldly stepped out to fulfill a dream and, really, you're quite inspiring!

For about 10 years now, I've been doing the thing that I've always wanted to do. Over the past year or two, it's been burning me out...but I look around and realize that nothing else would make me as happy. I know if I left and did something else, I'd be miserable. Reading about the excitement and the dream fulfillment in your life has helped me to remember how fortunate I have been, in spite of the bad days.

Off to buy the book!

P.S. You're not going to make me care about another pedophile/racist, are you? Because, really, you're making me doubt myself.

Wakey,
Thanks for the great email. So glad you are loving your life. It is a great feeling. And no, there are no people like TBag in the book. But the hero is a serial felon... and you still root for him!!
Best,
Nick

well that's weird. I suggest ordering it online, then you know you can get it as long as your mail carrier is competent

I think that story illustrates an amazing aspect of bookstores in 2007. A few weeks ago, I read about a book online. I wanted to read it right away and so I went to a local bookstore. They'd never heard of it or the author. I realized when I was in the store that I hadn't been there in a long time. Why? I buy all of my books online now. Brick and mortar bookstores can no longer reasonably stock all of the books that we are exposed to via our time online. In my opinion, Amazon is just one of the most dangerous places for me. Oh, you like this book? Then you'll LOVE this book. And, look! Here's a convenient link to put it in my shopping cart! Such a scary road to go down...but they are geniuses in marketing.

I'm surprised Borders didn't have the book, since it is being released from their publishing arm. Makes me curious. May need to do a bit of recon work when I get out of the office today. If they don't have it, I'll be sure to ask them why not! It's from the hottest young author out there today.

Nick, we've got your back.

By the way, you mentioned a serial felon that we'll love. (You're already making me question my taste in men!) When I was watching (for the umpteenth time) one of my all-time favorite episodes, Chicago, over the weekend, I got to wondering about something.

When you write the T-Bag storylines, do you intend to write the more empathetic side of T-Bag? Or is it that Robert Knepper (who, in my opinion, is a genius) is JUST THAT GOOD? Looking back at episodes, his character, as written, is just detestable...but damn if I don't just eat-up every one of his scenes!

Also had a question about the scene where they're in the Volvo and leaving town. I'd love to know the direction given for that scene. The music is so funny (Give me just a little more time...) and when he sticks his hand out the window, I laugh so hard. EVERY TIME. The grin on his face and the simple movement. Genius.

Told you it's one of my favorite episodes. Wakey, wakey, chillins!

Okay, back from the secret mission. Rest assured that you're well advertised in "PB, Season 1" country (Illinois). There is a large banner in the window and there is a table with your book on it (with large banner above) front and center as you walk into the store.

AND...

Did you know that you're endorsed by Vince Flynn?

I love his books. If I had walked in there and never heard of you, I would still buy the book on his recommendation. He is so amazingly talented. We call his books "Lost Weekend" books. Once I get them in my hands, you don't see me all weekend. I just love them!

Now I'm looking forward to a "Slip and Fall" Lost Weekend!

Hey. I work at Borders and Was the one who put your book out today when it was released. Its too bad you cannot come by my store in SoCal and sign copies of your book.

I am going to talk this one up with my customers.

Okay, to answer Wakey's questions:
1) We write TBag in a very certain way. He has a particular vocbulary based on his bizarre childhood. But you can write any character in a certain way, but it takes a great actor like Knepper to know exactly what the writer is looking for and to make it something so special. Knepper is great.
2) We agonized over finding the right music for when the drover off. I think we did a great job.
3) Either Bob or the director ad-libbed the hand signal during the car turn. the writers can't take credit for that - we did NOT put it in the script.
