Post Sarah Wayne Callies Interview 9/18

'Break' Time: Sarah Wayne Callies

By HUNTER HAUK / Quick

Character: Sara Tancredi, the prison doctor whose secret love for prisoner Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) justified her "forgetting" to lock the infirmary door and facilitating the Season One escape. In Season Two, she's dealing with the guilt while trying to overcome a resurgent drug problem.

Because of last season's overdose, your character is in an addiction support group this season. On a lighter note, what's something you're addicted to?

Wouldn't it be awful if the answer were something like heroin? Kidding. My addiction? Probably Project Runway –best show on TV, hands down. And good food, too. Meals are the reason I wake up in the morning.

You play a prison doctor who runs the emotional gamut. How did you prepare for this role?

I spoke with a physician who worked at a penitentiary that was like the real-life version of Fox River. I also visited a maximum security prison – that was a real eye-opener, but I developed a lot of compassion for the people there. Midway through last season, when I found out about the addiction storyline, I talked to professionals and read the book Junkie, which takes you pretty far into the mind of an addict. I also watched Requiem for a Dream.

We've seen some pretty high-profile characters get killed off this season. Are you sometimes afraid to read the next script?

You certainly never know when you're reading a script if it might be your last. But I'm not afraid, because this experience for me has been so rewarding. I'll still be grateful if it ends next week. When you give a job too much power over your happiness, it affects your performance. You make decisions that are safe, which I definitely don't want to do.

In Season One, you had lots of scenes with Wentworth Miller. Everyone I've talked to describes him as "quiet and mysterious." Can you give me more insight than that?

I would say he's unwavering. He's not afraid of who he is or who other people are. He's not afraid of celebrity, though I'm not sure he necessarily wants it, either. What I like about him is that you can't really throw him curveballs. It's not like he's pounding his chest with all this machismo, but he's just fearless.

This fall, the airwaves are overloaded with serial dramas. What gives Prison Break the edge?

I haven't seen the other shows, so I can't speak to what they lack. But a lot of my neighbors here in Texas watch the show, and they all say that, at first, they didn't think they'd be into it because of the subject matter. But it was the characters that drew them in. I think that's what's important, whether it's reality TV, serial dramas or procedurals.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Dallas when you aren't filming?

Well, I've found the best gym – Doug's Gym on Commerce. I think the guy who owns it has forgotten more about fitness than most people will ever learn. And it seems like he's had the same equipment since the Korean War. The first day I went there, I asked him if he had any cardio machines, and he threw me a jump rope. I knew I'd like the place then. We went to the Arboretum this weekend, and it was gorgeous. My husband and I aren't really the W Hotel, bump-and-grind kind of people.

IMDB.com tells me you are in a couple of upcoming films. If you could pick any Hollywood actor to work with, who would it be and why?

I could probably spend the rest of my life doing a Hepburn-and-Tracy thing with Wentworth. We work well together. But that said, George Clooney's a definite possibility. I've heard he's very kind. And Meryl Streep – I imagine that acting with her is like not acting at all. You just respond.
