Why does Michael drop the paper bird and Magazine down the drain?

er i think it was because he wanted to see if the pipe from the infirmary linked up to the pipe in the yard
only a guess though
the magazine would be used to trap the bird

^ Yeah. The magazine to trap the bird, and the bird to make sure that the pipe hasn't been blocked or redirected since.

You probably thought this was a stupid question but everytime i watch it, it just annoys me and makes it seem pointless. Why did it matter though? all he did was burn the pipe so he could get through :\.

The original plan was to leave from Scofields cell and get to the room below the infirmary, that pipe was probably needed to get there.

i also think the scene was there to show how quickly michael wanted to start his plans
as this was the first time he was in the yard
it was to show he wasn't hanging around and wanted to get going with the escape ASAP
