Prison Gang's, Accurately Depicted?

How accurate are prisoners, gangs and general life inside Joliet shown in Prison Break series 1?
Anyone who knows, is this a real view of what prison and its gangs are really like?

There much worse in reality. I watched this documentary once where they went inside a prison and talked to some of the inmates and it was basically, join a gang or risk being killed. Not that they are all like that, but apparently this one was.
