Steadman's company was a front for Caroline's campaign instead of spending investors money on making products they used it to fund her campaign for president. When the investors found out that they would get nothing in return for the money they invested Caroline etc had to 'kill off' Steadman before the investors could bring charges against him. They chose Lincoln to frame for the crime as his father had left the company and took valuable information with him and if his son was on death row they though he would come out rather than watch his son die.
