Steadman set up a fake company called Ecofield that funded his sisters presidential campaign. The investors never got anything in return for their investment and were going to have him indited so the company faked his death before he had to go to court. It is all in the scene in season 1 where Veronica and Nick meet Steadman's wife Leslie.

well she didn't know at that time , she and Killerman ( if he's the one you referring to ) were like good friends . Killerman proposed to her according to Steadman before he killed himself !
anyway she used Killerman when they were kool , they Killerman got a sudden change of heart and tried to Un-do his bad deeds .

i guess in order to live happily ever after it all ends , and that was stated in his concersations with his sister , they remove him from the records , disappear for little while then back with life next to his beloved sister when she's on the Oval Desk !!

Steadman owned a company called ecofield. This company was a front for funneling money from The Company to be used for Carolyn’s campaign for presidency. Aldo found out and informed the authorities. Steadman was about to be indicted for fraud. The problem was that The Company was using Ecofield. They did not want anyone to know of their involvement or that they even existed. So the Company decided to kill Steadman. But Carolyn formed a bargain with The Company to keep her brother alive. The deal was to fake his death. By faking his death, this would force the authorities to drop the indictment on Steadman because you can’t indict a dead man. Also the investigation would cease & no one would know about The Company.

Now they needed a pawn. Some one to pin the fake murder of Steadman on. The Company was upset with Aldo. Aldo was the one who told the authorities about Ecofield. Plus Aldo has been trying to take them down. So the Company chose Lincoln as the pawn in hopes of getting Aldo to surface so they could kill Aldo.

Steadman went along with the plan because he didn’t want to die. He had no other choice.
