The Trip from Chicago to Panama

Okay, so I've been re-watching season two the last couple of days and it reminded me of something I'd wondered when I watched before but never asked about.

What route do the brothers take from Chicago to Panama?

I hail from good ol' England so I'm not exactly familiar with American geography. I've taken a look at some maps and done a little research but I can't figure out their route. I thought perhaps they went down the Mississippi river and out into the Gulf of Mexico but the information I've found so far says that the river doesn't run through Chicago.

I did notice that the city borders Lake Michigan and thought perhaps they cross the lake and then go down river until they hit the Atlantic, but as far as I can tell there's no rivers that connect Lake Michigan to the Atlantic, not to mention that seems like a rather out-of-the-way route to take. Although, the maps I've got are covered with a lot of labels of towns so it may just be that I can't see it through all the writing.

So, if anyone can enlighten me as to how the brothers make it from Chicago to Panama via boat, I'm be very grateful.

Hey I can answer your question,I enjoy geography and maps and I can explain you the route they did by boat to get to Panama.
Anyway the scenes from Panama were filmed near Pensacola,Florida and it would be closer for them to get there...
If that would have been true they did a route from Chicago to Panama by boat,then they started their journey from Chicago marina crossing the channels that are connected to Illinois River and then on Mississippi River which they connect near Saint Louis and from here downstream to Gulf of Mexico,Caribbean Sea and then to Panama Channel.
I hope I gave you the right answer,you can check the map if you want.
Another route could be done from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron trough Mackinac Strait and the other lakes (they are connected through small rivers and straits) and then crossing St.Lawrence River to Atlantic Ocean and then south,but this route is much longer and you cannot pass through Niagara River too safely :P
