All the MiSa/KeSa debate made me want to write something. Also, please don't come in here flaming about KeSa, that's all I ask. I have a tendency to like pairings in shows that have not been explored in the show. Let me have my fun. XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX She was at the forefront of his mind, and maybe he didn’t have a right to think about her the way he was, but it didn’t stop the thoughts that were penetrating his conscious. She was in his thoughts and in his head and he liked it that way. The thing that stuck out to him the most was her smile. A toothy grin that reached her eyes even when he could see that something was haunting her from deep within. There had been a time when she had looked at him and not hated him. Not hated the person he was, but had enjoyed being around him. It was never Lance she was smiling at, always him. At least in his head it was always him. Maybe deep down he knew he was only fooling himself to think such a thing, but he pushed his reason aside. That didn’t matter now, what mattered what that once upon a time he had made her smile. The guard to his side spoke up, breaking his train of though, pushing aside the images of Sara smiling down at him, mouth full of pie and eyes sparkling. “Once seated, your four-piece will be mounted to the floor mount. During transport, do not speak to either—” “I know the drill,” Kellerman cut him off. He wanted the guard’s voice out of his head and Sara back. “Get in.” Paul stepped up into the truck and sat down. The metal cuffs were hard and cool against his skin. He turned his wrists over, listening to the metal clink a he moved. Wouldn’t be long now. And even still, even knowing his time was running out all he could think about was that smile and that laugh. He had made her laugh. Maybe he’d been pretending at the time but it had felt real when it happened. He’d felt connected to her in a way he couldn’t have predicted. Maybe if he hadn’t he wouldn’t be here. Maybe if he had just done his job… “So, what do we got, another 30 minutes?” the guard across from him called up to the driver. Didn’t matter now. “Yeah, something like that.” “Why didn't you take the freeway?” “Rush hour... Aw, hell.” “What?” “The engine light just came on.” Kellerman smiled. It was a fitting end he supposed. After all the killing he’d done, he couldn’t have expected karma not to come back around to him. He felt sated in the fact that at least the last thing he did had been for her—had been for Sara. She hadn’t deserved to be any part of this. An innocent bystander who in another time and another place might have been someone he could have loved. He’d hurt her more than he would have ever thought he could and at least this way he could make his amends. “It just got serviced at motor pool.” “Yeah, we better pull over just to make sure. All right, I'll check it out.” The car rolled to a stop and the driver hopped out of the car, lifting the hood to inspect the engine. The guard across from Kellerman was noticeably nervous and that made Paul smile. He probably had no idea what was happening. It was too bad for him. For a second Paul wondered if he had a wife or kids or anything but that thought was quickly banished from his mind. He didn’t want his last thoughts to be about this rent a cop and whether or not he had a family. He wanted his last thoughts to be about her. “In the French resistance it was considered a high honor to face a Nazi firing squad,” Kellerman started to say. “I thought I told you to be quiet.” “That you did your job. The highest honor was a smile when they shot you.” The back doors to the van flew open, the blinding light of the sun flooding the inside of the transport vehicle. Kellerman smiled as hooded figures came into focus, black against the bright sun. His smile was an accepting, unafraid smile and in his heart he knew there wasn’t a more honorable way to die. He’d done this for her, done this to save Sara. He could live with that and he could die with that. “Took you long enough.” |
