Yowza...
Welcome to the forums!

Of course it is well known to all on here that there are wars etc.. going on in this world about us. Some of us have lived through one from a very early age... Even, I was born into one.... and we are now, nearly 40 years later... just on the tail end of it... so we all do experience it in one form or another! I appreciate what you are saying....

Getting together and having a bit of fun on these threads does not take away from the fact that our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved or affected by all these atrocities.

There has always from day one, been wars, and sadly, there will always be many more then one going on about the world at any given time!!! .... There are more wars on at the moment then just the Iran/Irac conflict!

People, come on these forums from every corner of the world, they all have experienced some sort of war, or a backlash from one... or a possible uprising about to occur.... There are far too many of them to mention at this time!

The whole point of these forums for most is that they have a place they can switch off from life... they need somewhere they can get away to and find some common ground, some common interests with others. TV, can help people switch off from a bit.... That's a good thing!!! Why would anyone, if given the choice, choose to think about war all the time???

Sometimes, a place like this is the only place a voice can be heard....
I'm glad you have chosen to make your voice heard on here.

Hope to catch up with you soon!

Not strictly speaking ... war torn as such.... I am Irish originally.... I am from Republic Of Ireland, I have lost friends through various incidents in the North of Ireland, in the 'Troubles' over the years... It started in late 60's... I was born early 70's... the 70's & 80's and up to the mid 90's, many people were killed in the North and some down the South, through violence.

I moved over to England in 1995... and for the first few years, here I felt like an outcast, Because of the nature of my now ex husbamds job at the time....[Navy Civilian] He was told he could never apply for any advancement in his job, due to the fact he had married an Irish Nationist.... The fact that neither me or my family didn't affiliate to any of these groups who murdered or maimed etc... completely passed them all by.... He was also given a rolled up mat & a mirror on a stick, he was supposed to get down on the ground to check for bombs underneath our car - every morning and evening!!! I was banned from any of his work functions, even miles away from his work... and none of them were allowed over to our house, even for dinner! He also was required to get permission from them every time we went back over to Ireland even for a weekend break! It was silly beyond silly!!!!

Another time, a year or two later, we were spending a weekend down in Wales at a Rugby international.... My cousin was on the Irish team at the time.... and we went into a pub there for dinner and I was punched and nearly knocked out by a 6 footer giang of a guy entirely because of my accent and the fact that I was Irish... I was just sat there, not causing any harm to anyone.... He nearly broke my jaw.... I was bruised and had a bleeding mouth, that needed a cold compress for a bit. Same night as I was applying the compress, a random other guy came up to me and screamed at me... something along the lines of...'So Irish B****... How do you assemble a bomb then?' They're stories I have never told my parents about... never wanted them to worry about me... Thankfully, it's never happened since.

Also, due to peoples understanding about the 'Troubles' in Ireland at the time.... It took me a full year and a half to get a teaching job when I first moved to England... I was a qualified Special Eds Teacher, a Nursery Nurse and a Paeds Nurse... and for the love of God above, I couldn't get a job, cause of my sodden accent... It all boiled down to this Headteacher in a school, who just gave me a break... He saw past the accent and saw the potential... Once I got one job with him, His accompanying reference when I left there got me job offers all round... I am so grateful to him for the break I had and for seeing past the race stuff...

My brother rang me during lunch one day around St. Patricks Day one year and one of my older work colleagues at the time, was so horrible to me later on in the day all down to the fact, he overheard me speak in Irish, not english to my brother over the phone... just because of the privacy of the content of the chat... We were discussing my gran's illness at the time and a family issue that I didn't want talked about by my colleagues! He had himself convinced I was over organising another bombing....

It's all funny now... but It was all far from funny then!!! My friends and I often joke about aspects of it now... but it all honestly gave me nightmares for a good while after!!!

Ironically, one of the first weeks I taught in this school, I had to call a parent in to the office for a meeting cause he, once seeing me out in the playground, collecting the children into school one morning... on hearing my accent... obviously Irish... then told his 5 year old kid ... ' Don't talk to her, She is most probably from the side that kills in Ireland....'.... By that, he meant Catholic and Protestant... The ones who get killed and the ones who kill, respectively....

I know... It's not true... but this is what I had to face when I first moved out of home...

The only reason, I guess why there has been a break in all of this anger towards all this, is obviously better education in schools etc... nowadays... and dare I say it.... because attention has been averted to other areas of the globe and to other races now... Suddenly the Irish and their problems don't suddenly seem so bad!!!

Mental, I know.... Racism is certainly a horrible thing at the best of times!!!! But you know... we rise above it and just move on....

On the plus side... things have thankfully moved on now.... and I love living here in this country... I have made great friends who take me as I am.... Work wise now, my accent is actually a bonus and now a problem when going for jobs etc...
I have also been back to these areas many times since and never ever experienced any problem after that....

OMG smiley that is horrible. What you have been thru is even worse of being German and admitting to the world! But things there have changed too. Gladfully.
Ironically the British were one of the saviours that freed Germany in 1945 ( I live in the former British sector after WW2) and they did those things to the Irish.

Ireland by the way: I heard it is a beautiful country and I am going to visit it one day. I love the stories about Leprechaunts and stuff and I think the Irish should keep their language! It is good to have English as a world language so we can't communicate with each other, but the differencies and the many languages is what makes Europe so rich of culture. We should preserve this for generations coming after us.

Ohhh I am so dense!!!! I just got why you thought I was the lovely Whistler......

No, I am not Whistler.... But I am probably his biggest.... if not his only fan on here.....

Are you another Whistler fan, AlexBbaby??????
Welcome to the forums, BTW....

I heard Denmark is beautiful.... I used to love Jasper Olsen, who used to play for Man Utd... back in the 80's.... I fancied him..... I wonder what he is up to now... I never heard anything more about him once he left UTD...

And then you Danish gave us the wonderful Peter Schmeichel.... Ex goalie with UTD.... Wonderful guy!!!!
Glory Days....

Acchhhhh Stick 'n stones.... We Irish are a good bunch!!!! We are slowly but gradually taking over each corner of the world.... branching out....

There's a saying.... There is two types of people in the world.... Those who are Irish... and those who wish they were!!!!!

Yeah... I love speaking my own language.... sometimes when I am really tired or grouchy ... or when I am not feeling the best.... I instinctively think in Irish first... Then have to translete into english.... Of course my english is fluent... I have a mum who speaks only english, my father is of duel language...

It's kind of funny when me and him get together and have a row.... He'll let me swear til I am blue in Irish... But I can't say the slightest bad sounding word in english.... He even scolds me for using the word bum!!!

We Irish call our language Gaeilge [ Go-wail-ga] .... We call english... Bearla [Bear -la] ...

I wish I knew what it sounds like! Is it a romanic or a germanic based language? Or does it sound viking like? Ahh that's soo interesting. If we ever meet you have to teach me someting. When I was in Canad once, they taught me how do sing Brother Jacob in Inuit. That sound so neat!

btw what is the weather like in Ireland? Same as in Britian?
