If you're a big fan of One Tree Hill fan and pay attention to the online rumor mongering and general discussion, you're probably well aware of the "spoiler" I'm about to discuss. Even if you read our exclusive interview with One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn, you'll know what I'm talking about. It concerns the writers' plans for the next season (the fifth) of One Tree Hill. Nevertheless, if you don't want the surprise ruined, read no further. Although I won't be relaying any specific plot information, this plan, if they go through with it, will greatly impact the direction of the show.

I was watching a rerun of Buffy the Vampire Slayer the other morning and it made me revisit our interview with Mark Schwahn. It was the 5th or 6th season of Buffy and she was out of high school. It was in the midst of the "college years". The episode was fine (it was about witches), but it made me think of how superior the high school years were to the subsequent college seasons. Unfortunately, this is a universal TV phenomenon.

Finally an interesting article Dahl. I for one am sick and tired of reading or skipping articles on American Idol, and the Amazing Race. There is nothing to write about these repetetive "reality competetions." As I diehard fan of the teen drama genre, I am excited about this bold move that One Tree is going to embark on. Buddy TV shold focus on interesting tv ideas, good writing, and acting. And leave to boring American Idol stories for mass media. Would it kill you Dahl to write about Boston Legal once. This is one of the most underapreciated shows on tv. Every episode has wit, sex, politics, and courtroom theater. We already get hit in the head with it all day long, lets focus on more quality articles such as this one.

I agree with you completely I am very interested to see the 5th season now we just have to work on getting it picked up. I really like how you talk about the TV shows. As a fan of Buffy also I can agree that after high school though the show was still successful it was missing something. The only show that had ever been able to make a clean transfer to college was Boy Meets World which is think partly is because of there was only 4 real regulars. With a show like One Tree Hill with so many characters that would never work.

I totally agree - skipping college is a great idea! Schwahn, you're the man!! With all sorts of drama put into Tree Hill High, how is it possible for the college years to top it?!! Whatever these kids have been through in Tree Hill High - they are likely to experience them again (maybe on a slightly different level) in college. I would hate to see them all in one university - - so I'd rather they meet up again after college. The only low point in this marvelous idea is that we Naley fans will miss the part when Nathan and Haley raise their toddler. I would love to see flashbacks of those scenes in Season 5.

I agree that jumping ahead is a great idea. However, I would have to strongly disagree with your notion that all good drama happens in high school. How could you say that Buffy and Saved By the Bell and 90210 were better in high school? So 15 year olds are more interesting that 20 year olds? That's absurd. The real drama happens after high school. But One Tree Hill has already done this, because their version of high school is analogous to college or even after college, as Mark Schwahn has pointed out. Therefore jumping ahead four years or so cuts out unnecessary time. The characters are already mature, and don't need to go to college. The idea of verisimilitude is irrelevent. No teen drama is realistic. They're not supposed to be: that's why its called drama.

i love the fact that the show is going to skip the college years. every other show who attempted this has in fact lost my attention over time. i love one tree hill and am thrilled that the show is going in this direction. plus the writers have way more opportunity to explore with each character. its great. instead of trying to come up with something new every time and just using the same stuff over and over. i, for one, am very interested in what the new season is going to be like. plus that actors will be playing characters their own age. i will be waiting by the tv for that 5th season.
