| There is some other girl running around here calling herself "lostgirl108" so don't be fooled! I am sure it is some sort of operative for the other side... although I am I not sure exactly who is an other: The Others, Dharma or somebody else entirely. Regardless--beware! |

| Here is a question When do they finally pick their candidate for sides? Is that what all these primary's are for? |

| Moderator ![]() | For each "primary" there's a number of delegates assigned to the winning candidate. So once the primary's are done...there's a convention where the delegates stand and announce their designation -- it's a big party, basically, where they proclaim the party winner (usually known a few days/weeks ahead fo time). |

| Isn't it still true--and this actually used to happen back in the Old Days--that a delegate is only required to vote for the person that won their Electoral votes the first count? There is a certain amount of delegates that you get to win and if nobody gets over that number, then there is a second vote. It used to be that the electoral delegate sent to give his states electoral vote for Mr. Smith could give them to anyone he wanted in subsequent votes. Of course that doesn't happen today because, as tail already pointed out, the National Convention is really just a rubber stamp since everyone already knows who the parties' nomination will be way before. But back before we were a 2 party system, crazy stuff actually went down in U.S. politics. Personally, I think it might get more people involved in politics if our National Houses of Congress had a fist fight every once in awhile like in Italy--or at least a little spirited name calling. For the average person watching C-Span is a cure for insomnia. |

| [quote=lost_grrl;1117056] Isn't it still true-- quote] LOST_Grrl is one of my favourite TTS names! Hate to get serious on our fun TTS site, but think this is important to understand for everybody cuz everyone is directly impacted. Think this is about Federalism where each state decides their own process with some oversight and control by the national party, presumably for the good of the party. For example, several states allow registered Independents to vote in either party's primary which is intended to be good, but can be bad. For example, some rude "Independents" vote for the candidate that they feel will hurt the party they dislike. This is similar to several rude political writers who write good things about candidates they want to hurt the party they dislike, even hate. Hillary won Michigan as the only candidate on the ballot because the state chose to hold their primary earlier than the national party ruled is ok, so the national party ruled no Michigan delegates. All the Democratic candidates except Clinton stayed away from Michigan bowing to the national party, while Hillary joined with the local Michigan party. Hillary won Michigan primary, but received no convention/national delegates. Each state has its own rules as to how their delegates are allocated at the convention, e.g., all or percentage, as well as a delegate's voting throughout the convention, i.e., 1st round versus 2nd round. Also, knowing the Nominees b4 the convention is good in the sense that the party is united against their opponent rather than battered and bruised. The convention is then more about what the platform and strategies are about. OHhhh, and the partying, sex, and drinking. I am truly an Independent. However, imho, it is clear that after 7 years (!) of Republican rule of all three branches of our government, they have failed on every issue and every one of their own stated principles. Listen to what people say, but always watch what they actually do. There is a reason why no Republican candidate is crowing about the recent Republican record or with Bush at their side. Think our best choice among the available choices is President Hillary/VP Richardson - RichPundit Last edited by RichPundit : 01-19-2008 at 03:33 AM.
