| My man Markus, How can you be British and not know Richard Dawkins. This is the best book ever! Its also a best seller, and has massive facebook fan clubs which are really funny. Yah Dawkins!!!! At this address you can read the first chapter and see a A You Tube video http://richarddawkins.net/godDelusion The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins A preeminent scientist – and the world's most prominent atheist – asserts the irrationality of belief in God and the grievous harm religion has inflicted on society, from the Crusades to 9/11. With rigor and wit, Richard Dawkins examines God in all his forms, from the sex-obsessed tyrant of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children, buttressing his points with historical and contemporary evidence. The God Delusion makes a compelling case that belief in God is not just wrong, but potentially deadly. It also offers exhilarating insight into the advantages of atheism to the individual and society, not the least of which is a clearer, truer appreciation of the universe's wonders than any faith could ever muster. Richard Dawkins is the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford, a position he has held since 1995. The Wall Street Journal said his "passion is supported by an awe-inspiring literary craftsmanship." The New York Times Book Review has hailed him as a writer who "understands the issues so clearly that he forces the reader to understand them too." Among his previous books are The Ancestor's Tale, The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker, Climbing Mount Improbable, Unweaving the Rainbow, and A Devil's Chaplain. This is the Wikipedia article about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_God_Delusion This is the Link to the Amazon.com info about it: http://www.amazon.com/God-Delusion-R...2445947&sr=1-1 |

| I think that part of his style is being a bit outrageous. It what makes him so funny. And, people who use reason, are intellectually superior. |

| He seems perfectly calm to me. It is the outrageous insults of other people that irk me. His arguements are compelling. He backs them with evidence rather than "faith". What's the problem. Have you read The God Delusion? |

| Moderator ![]() | What's the point of atheism? Wouldn't there be MORE violence, theft or reckless ambiguity if there was 100% certainty of no after-life? To know you're going to blip out of existence, into absolute nothing, with no awareness and memory...to believe, completely, that there's nothing to do after "shuffling off the mortal coil"...why wouldn't you live with abandon? Not to get all melancholy on you, gang, but I hope there's something out there or I've wasted a lot of time already. |

| You need to learn about history if you think that religion has made the world a better place. I have a lot of morals and they do not come from religion. There will always be people who do bad things, a lot of those bad things right now are done in the name of relgion, or God. There is nothing nihalistic (spelling) about Atheism. It is about living in this world, rather than imagining that there is something bigger and better somewhere else. We've all wasted a lot of time, (I'm doing it right now) that's the point, one life, one chance, don't waste it. |

Since when does a "benevolent" diety require you to beat your detractors into submission?) It's not a matter of religion...it's Faith and Belief. I have no problem with yours, but I believe everyone should be allowed to choose their own path. And if you want to read something about faith -- pick either British Satirist you want: Douglas Adams (particularly the Long, Dark Tea-Time of the Soul) or Terry Pratchett's Small Gods (yay, Discworld!). Go forth in sin, no more. Oh for Satan's sake...lighten up, people! |
