I'm basically a newbie, but I've been lurking here for so long, and I just really wanted to add my two cents. Also, I'm writing an essay, and any excuse not to concentrate on actual school work, you know?

Anyway, I know that one of the big reasons for the horrible ratings, is that Fox decided to put the OC on 2 months after practically every other primetime show has started and viewers are already in their watching routines, and in its timeslot, it's pitted against Grey's Anatomy - an incredibly huge show that shares the same demo's as the OC - and CSI!

I can understand that the first episode, because it aired the 2nd of November, had to be 5 months later. They can't just have it be the end of May when in real-time it's almost US Thanksgiving, because timelines like Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. would not match up, so it wouldn't have made any sense for them to do it that way.

When the season 3 finale aired and they killed of Marissa, I was so pissed off. But now I can see that they, IMO, made the right decision. Mischa had said time and time and time again that they did everything they could with her character, and it's true. Some people suggested a Marissa pregnancy storyline, but I think that would've been an awful story idea. With Marissa dead, it's like this huge explosion in the lives of the main characters and now we get to see how they're dealing -- or in some cases, not dealing.

I was able to d/l the second episode of the season, and I think it's really good. There's so much material for the writers to work with, with the aftermath of the death of one of the central characters, and we're really getting to see some true, deep emotions from the characters. We're seeing certain strong relationships falter, and certain not-so-strong ones begin to build. Everything on the show is so interesting and complex now, and I keep wondering what's coming next, and how they can possibly resolve some of these seriously intense issues.

I agree. Creativity and storyline-wise, killing off Marissa was a brave decision and a right one too. Ryan and Julie's reactions to the death have been written very well and I think Ben and Melinda are doing an absolutely fantastic job. However, I would still say that I wish they had chosen something else. Mischa is a VERY popular actor and the fall in ratings is mostly because her fans have abandoned the show. Of course, Season 3, which in my opinion really had no standard lol, should also be taken into account.

I really miss Marissa a lot. I love Mischa and somehow the show doesn't seem the same without her, but I have to say this - I've loved what I've seen so far. This new, much darker OC, really is amazing.

I think everybody covered everything but basically FOX were being retards and basically throwing the show out to the lions.

As for the the Marissa fanbase, all we can hope is that those who gave up after she died hear from word of mouth how great the premiere was and hopefully they'll come back.

It does suck but I think that the show is really good now. Even without Marissa.

Well I dont know about America, but here in Australia, alot of people didn't even know the first few episodes were on!!IT was REALLY REALLY badly advertised. Like it had great advertisments, but it was all like 'COMING SOON' or 'THIS SPRING' never the actual date it started!!! Whivh sucks. Luckily I'd caught one of the few adds that said 'NEXT TUESDAY' so I knew it was on!!

And once again, can't comment on America, but here, alot of people are happy Marissas gone LOL Not me, coz I thought she was good, but i'm loyal too! But yeah, the ratings went down big time last yr here, coz people were just sick of Marissa this, Marissa that, when Australia is Seth/Summer mad.

So I blame the advertising for rating drops in Aus, and also, after the drop last season, many veiwers have never come back
