I love music. Pretty much everything about it. I've played guitar for about a year and a half now and am really in love with it. I played piano for 8 years before that and am in my school's band with the French Horn.

So I was curious if I have any other band geeks out there? Or like the cool rock star geeks lol...

I'm currently studying music at university, so yes, lol.

French horn major... and i'll play a little of anything brass, piano, acoustic, bass, didge, djembe, cowbell...

If you have any french horn related questions feel free to ask, I'll tell you all I know. This'll be my 12th year rocking the horn.

Cool! I'll be sure to ask you if I have any problems. Hmm...Honor band tryouts in a week from tomorrow, will you audition for me? hahaha. just kidding.
I have pressure on me this year because I've made last year. Now my band directors expect me to make it each year. ugh.

I love music, but I've never learned an instrument. I am interested in learning the violin, though.

Tried to pickup electric guitar last christmas, just couldnt do it. I blame the left-handed learning curve on a right handed guitar and string-reversal.

So pretty much I just stick to my voice/vocals.

What excerpts are you playing? As much of a pain in the ass it is the best practise you can ever do is scales, scales and more scales. In a week I'll run through around 10 scales in various patterns and arpeggios and other strange applications. It does help, gets your fingers used to the setting your brain needs to be in. And take an active role in the pieces you are playing if you have an accidental ask why? (to yourself not your conductor, lol) Find out what key you are in when the accidental occurs and the fingerings will be built into your brain for that particular key if you have been donig your scales. Also pay attention to key changes/ modulations and feel comfortable starting scales on degrees other than do or so (ending on ti, or starting on re is rather challenging)

One of the best exercises for a horn player is harmonics, I will grab a copy from my practise stuff sometime soon if you are interested. It details all of the notes that can possibly be played on a particular fingering and demonstrates how close together they get as you go up in degree, it's very difficult to find some of the notes, and ultimately master, but a great application in awareness of your own sound.

If you haven't read it pick up the Philip Farkas book "Art of French Horn Playing" it's contents are very rewarding and considered standard knowledge among horn players. http://www.amazon.com/French-Horn-Playing-...s/dp/0874870216

Best of luck with your auditions! Too bad in Canada no one takes marching band seriously and we all get drunk and have a great time making music... heehee.
