Theory: Naomi knew she would die, Penny's in the past, Desmond is time travelling.

So, here is my theory. It is a bit unrefined but I think it has some potential.

Premise 1:

Charlie spoke to a Penny who is actually in the past via the Looking Glass.
She had not yet sent Naomi to the island, but because of this scene she recruits her. This would require that Penny be some what aware of the time annomally of the island. Which is quite possible since she is clearly connected to it in some way via her father and that her office phone was dialing straight to the Looking Glass.

Premise 2:
Desmond and Sayid will in fact travel back in time on the helicopter on the way to the freighter. There, they will encounter a living Naomi on her way to the island. However she will be aware that she is going to die /could be killed on the island which is why she said the line to Jack "If anything should happen to me, you should know how to use the satelite phone" meaning she was already anticipating her own death---but it could happen in a different way than the first time---the universe course correcting itself. Desmond will either give Naomi the photograph of him and Penny (one of a kind) or she will steal it.

Premise 3
Desmond's "flashes" are in fact memories of multiple returns to the island. Each one having a different outcome. (I'm not sure if this works but there might be something to this idea)...thus with each Charlie death, there is a different outcome. Remember he said that one death lead to Penny landing on the island. The Looking Glass death leads to contacting Penny, and Penny sending Naomi on the helicopter.

Danial Faraday said that the helicopter must return to the exact coordinates. So clearly a mistake will mean they return to a different time. Thus Naomi's crash happens then, rather than at some other time.

Does this make sense? This theory is primarily trying to solve the mystery of why Naomi had a one of a kind photograph of Desmond.

I will write more as I think of it.

You still need to resolve the problem that Penny did not send Naomi or the freighter crew.

Also, the photo isn't one of a kind. We saw at the very end of Season 2 that Penny has the same photo framed by her bed. Naomi's copy is a color photocopy it looks like. From Frank and Daniel's reactions this week to Desmond's questions, I think the boaties know something about Penny, even if it's just through Charles Widmore.

The photograph is a big mystery of LOST and they really better deal with it.

If it is the same photograph---I've seen screen caps where the photos look like different pictures. check out the link below. This is where it gets really confusing. The woman in one of the photos is not Penny at all.

Desi's Bro good call I like it. Perhaps when Desmond turned the key it was meant to allow him to alter the past to prevent a catastrophe, and with that he new leaking info might lessen his chances. so now he must decide the best way to save the most lives as well as finding his way back to Penny. Unfortunataly it may be possible that he also knows that he too must die to save others (anyone old enough to remember the movie Krull, remember the cyclopse that traded one eye for the ability to see the future only to realize it allowed him to know how he died). Then again one might hope Desmond could figure out a way to alter time. Lets hope we don't see him reading any charles dickens novels any time soon.

That's a really interesting theory. I'm sure time travel appears in there somehow! I echo the WTF. I'd never noticed that before.

I agree somewhat. The producers have admitted that time manipulation is a theme of lost but also said that its not typical to what we've seen represented in other shows or movies. Therefore I believe that when the O6 get rescued they are sent back in time before the crash and are called the "Oceanic 6" not because they were rescued but because they refused to get on the plane the second time. They are survivors in the sense that they cheated death not that they actually got rescued. Its possible that when they return to the past they don't return as a second Jack or a second Kate. There are not two of them they are the same person retaining the memories of what happened. They know there are actual survivors and that is their secret and a select few also know they know possibly previous survivors of the loop that got out at one point. The original inhabitants of the island may all have been previous survivors that broke the loop and have somehow found a way back to the island to live there in peace and free of what ever secret organization is out there to protect the secrets of the island. The same secret organization that is after Ben and the same organization that Ben recruited Syid to terminate one by one in order to "protect his friends"
Penny knows to contact Charlie at that exact moment because she knows the secret. If you remain on the island or get rescued and take the flight again you remain in the loop. The O6 has broken the loop by not taking the flight the second time and Jack wants back in.
