Default Ben and Locke The Foil

Two people given relatively symilar circumstances, each given the same set of choices, each choosing the path opposite of the other, (possibly because that path was already occupied) For example Ben and Locke: Both raise without one or both parents, both had mothers named Emily, Both were asked, told, (or had the option to) kill their fathers. Both had their kidneys held hostage, Locke's was stollen by his biological father, Ben's was violated by Jack when he forced him to free his friends, both leaders one by design one by merit or circumstance

Now granted a good deal of this may be reaching, but anyone who watches enough of the serial type tv shows knows that there is an easy way out when it comes to writing characters, write an archetype, develope the character tragic comedic so on, then create a foil, a wrench in the works, a mirror image of the archetype, symilar in feature very different in character, the foil is convinced that they are correct and that they must "fix" their opposite. The great thing about Lost is that you never quite know who the foil is.

Default Foils maybe, Brothers I reckon.

Just posted in speculation,

I think that they are half-brothers with the same mother. The name "emily" is too much a coincidence. In lost nothing is ever a coincidence. Just look at the facts.

We've seen young Ben and his mother Emily when she was young, but not young Locke and we've only seen Locke's mother when she was older. Allowing her to travel to and from the island.

Horace was there when Emily "died" and then took roger and ben to the island. The possiblity that she went to the island and "came back to life".
Mikhail "died" and then came back to life, like Ben's mother (possibly).

Both killed their fathers (although Locke got Sawyer to do the dirty work) at Ben's request.

The time line fits. Emily had Locke with Anthony Cooper gave him up and then married Roger Linus. 5-10 year difference.

Emily is still alive, and possibly knows more than most.

I know there's a lot of "ifs" but I think that there would be no reason to give the two mothers the same name otherwise.

PS - What's the deal with Richard? How'd dows that guy stay the same age??

Unfortunately, Ben's mother died. That's why Roger never remembered Ben's birthday. It meant he would have to remember the day his wife, and his hopes, died. Roger didn't hate Ben, he hated everyone and everything because others had happiness and he only knew loss. His character weakness was that he took it out on the only target he had available, Ben. Locke's mother is still alive and well, in a nut-house. Both have mother's with the same name and other similarities but different perspectives. Locke seeks life and wants to "find his true path". Ben hides on the island with a community he created and controls in order to avoid having "a true life".
