| Okay, here we go.. I know other people has come up with simular theories, but I just wanted to post mine anyways. First one thing to mention: Ben sees dead people (Da-da-da-daaaaah) I believe that Jacob is a ghost/spirit, held hostage by the evil manipulating SOB bug-eyed-Ben.. Evidence #1: The circle surrounding the shack on the haunted hill.. In some cultures, circles made out of something (I dont remember what that something is) keeps ghosts/spirits away and/or in places. Evidence #2: Ben sees his dead mom - Ben sees Jacob. Evidence #3: NO ONE other that Ben has ever seen or met Jacob. Jacob is no leader, Ben is infact "the man behind the curtain". Ben simply uses Jacob against the others, to keep them afraid, to keep them believing. If Ben never told the others that Jacob was the one he takes orders from, what excuse would he then use, when/if he did something that went awefully wrong? What better excuse is there than: "Im sorry, but Jacob told me to do so.. Im sure he has a plan". NO TECHNOLOGY! I'm also pretty sure that is was a lie when Ben said that Jacob didnt like technology. Sure he does, Ben just dont want him to get any. Why? Because this sets Jacob free. maybe it doesnt allow him to cross the circle, but it gives him strenght. Ben knows this. And a question: If you had a boss that everyone was afraid of, would you EVER yell something in the line of: "That enough! You've had your fun"? I think not. Why did jacob ask Locke to help him? Let me tell you why.. He is SICK of being held prisoner by Ben. He wants to be free. Jacob wants to get the hell out of the prison Ben put him in. And on to the shooting part. Ben shot Locke, because he was afraid to get caught in his own lie. Ben is not special. Not the same way that Locke is. Ben knows nothing about the secrets of the island, but he does not want anybody else to know that. Which is why he shoots Locke. Jacob SPOKE to Locke. Ben couldnt hear this, only Locke could. Now Ben is afraid that Jacob might tell Locke the truth about his big fat lie and he would loose the grab he has on his people. Now be easy on me. First theory postet.. And pardon my english.. Not really from around here.. I'd love to hear your thoughts.. |

| Very good! I like your theory. Especially the part about technology setting Jacob free. That should certainly apply if he is the product of a Dharma test. I have a feeling he's much older than that, though. The only hole I see is that several people have seen dead people. |

| Senior Member | Great theory!! I agree 100% with alot of the points. I also have issue with the seeing dead people thing. The reason why he shot Locke i believe is dead on (pun intended).

| Jacob is/was a person and we have seen him before. If u look closely u can see him too... Just after Ben shakes the chair and says that is enough the camera pans and u see a glimpse of Jacob!!!! |

| Okay, I can see why you have a problem believing the dead-people part.. Okay, yeah.. So many people have seen dead people. Well then the only other explanation i can come up with, is that in order to see Jacob you have to believe. You have to believe that he is really there. I'm pretty sure, that as soon as all these thing starts flying around in the creepy-shack, Locke, if only for a second, has himself convinced that someone is there, Jacob is there. I had to watch the scene a few times before i noticed Jacob in the chair, and the creepy close-up of his eyes. He is definatly scared, im sure of it. |

| I think that before thoerizing on Jacob we'd need to know how did Ben become the leader of a group of people in which he was only "recently" accepted...... |

| Moderator ![]() | I like the ideas posted here and I can't help but wonder if the Flash of Jacob we see in the chair meant something...nothing metaphorical or whatnot but did that Flash mean that Ben could see him, momentarily, like when he heard him? Was Jacob trying to get beyond Ben's control to show himself to Locke? After they leave the house -- Locke asks "What was all that?" (paraphrasing) Ben never asks if Locke saw Jacob at any point afterwards...he just asked what he was told. |

| I think Ben became the leader the very first time he and Richard met.. If you look at the expression on Richards face when Kid-Ben tells him that he saw and spoke with his dead mom. Im pretty sure he became their leader because he is/they think that he''s special. |

the dharma camp.killing his father may have been his entrance to the group but i do agree that Alpert did seem pretty intrested in him seeing his dead mother, may be the fufillment of some prophecy where a young boy comes to island sees his dead mom is the chosen one kind of thing | |
