"Smokie" is part of Ben!

After watching "the brig" I noticed something more prominent than ever before. When Ben was trying to get Locke to kill his dad, his pupils became large and very black. After Locke did not do it, you could clearly see the color of his pupils. I believe "Smokie" is Ben's subconscious, much like the "energy monster" of the 50s movie "Forbidden Planet".

when I was watching it- I was convinced that his eyes did change, It was so freeky! I saw his pupils get large and black. I like your theory...interesting!

I'm with you, and think many others are as well!

Seems to fit well that Ben's psyche is sensed, analyzed, and creates powerful actions like Smokey, perhaps sometimes unintentionally. Think true for other psyches at various levels too, depending perhaps on a person's genes, such as Locke walking, Jack's Bad Dad, Ecko's brother, perhaps even Vincent, and much more. Both Ben's and Locke's psyches seem intensely linked to our Island, perhaps why the "Black Box" created Bad Dad Cooper, perhaps unintentionally by Locke's psyche.

Maybe also why Mittlewerk/Hanso was stealing organs as part of their gene/virus research leading to extended life ... from related technology to leverage the Island's observed healing and other incredible capabilities. Maybe why the bunker stations are like vaults, even the secret Staff room, as protection against psyche created monsters.
