why would you think he is lying? we know Juliet came to the island pretty recently (2001-ish), which means someone out there is still doing active recruiting. so it's easy to believe that patchy could have been recruited just as he said, especially after the whole collapse of communism and looking for a new start.

| I concur on barber making a great point. Rousseau arriving around 1988 comes from Sayid's calculation that the distress call had been repeating for 16 years, as well as her statements that it was only a few months after she arrived on the island that all the **** went down and she recorded that message. There's still the possibility that time flows at a different rate on the island, so while Rousseau has been there for 16 of her years, she may have arrived before or after 1988 (the World Series bit throws a monkey wrench in this). The whole Mittelos --> lost time thing has to come into play somewhere. I'm also not entirely sold on there being a sickness per se. I think it might be related to the mind tricks that the monster plays on people (seeing animals, people, and visions from one's past). Also, I was under the impression that there never was black smoke on the horizon back in 1988 (or whenever); rather, it was just a ruse to give Rousseau's warning some sense of reality when she lit her own signal tirefire. The other possibility is that I don't think has been discussed is that she did see black smoke on the horizon, but it was the monster getting really huge for some reason. Hmmmm... |

| CD's aren't recorded magnetically like tapes, but rather physically encoded onto the surface of the disc (well, under the surface). There are records in the Swan because that was the medium of choice back in 1975-1980. |

For clarification though.. the first CD players started arriving on the market in 1985. It took a couple years to get mainstream and cheap after that.. at least until the late 80's-early 90's. And Cassette Tape was the medium of choice due to portability(not quality) in the 80's :P. Oh how I do remember boomboxes and the trusty Sony Walkman. | |

| Five will get you 10 that the incident is the most severe of a series of genetic experiments gone way wrong and eventually leading to the creation of Smokie or the monster or both, if you will. The purge likely is a byproduct of the incident. Danielle's folks went one way. Ben, who fathered a child by her (why could she survive pregnancy, by the way? there are more than a few kids on the island, and if Ben is telling the truth about having been born on the island, then we'll assume he impregnated Danielle there as well), went the other. Maybe it's just me, but I'd put aside he hope of learning anything too deep regarding the past, at least for the year. Lost has found the formula (a good story has a protagonist and an antagonist) and will probably spend the rest of the season dragging us back and forth between which is which and who we can trust and when Jack will finally make a decision that turns out good for anybody it involves. |
