The others and the smoke monster

I beleive that smokey is not a monster, but more of an "essence". why? well, it was deflected by the sheild barrier, so whatever that smoke's made of must be some kind of matter, not gas. If it was gas, it'd just go by and not be affected by whatever the machine did. It did also not get "hurt", it just ricochet of it. What could it be an essence of?? Possibly a demon, or maybe it's a person who "fused" with the island. But that could also be false, seeing as how it couldn't just reaapear inside of the sheild. Maybe it's angry becuase the others put dangerous machines in it's native territory which is upsetting the island's nature and making it go all screwy and mad. Well anyways, do you have any thoughts on this?

I agree with what Hex posted the other day, all the Losties defiantely look at smokie as some kind of spiritual or supernatural force though some of the the sounds it make's are distinctly mechanical although there were some new noises thrown in this week.

I posted this on another thread and got no response but I'm sure when smokie approaches the fence where Julliette and Kate are, you see a tree fly up into the air and then three ( maybe two ) smaller smokie's shoot up from the ground and form in to one big as it enters the clearing right in front of the fence, Power Rangers style , is this why it's called cerebrus......the 3 headed dog....guardian of the underworld. You can see this quite clearly on DVD pause so no special equiptment needed. Please shoot down this theory if you disagree or elaborate if it make 's any sense........like you need an invitation!!!!

Hey all - I'm new here. I posted this in the comments at tvsquad too... My theory is that Jacob is the smoke monster.

We all know smokey can take other forms (e.g., Yemi), and so is not just some animal--despite all the roaring and animal-like behavior it displayed last week. So it is a smarter and more cunning thing than it often seems. And we know that the monster "scans" its prey and somehow shows them their life when they look into it. Perhaps that has something to do with knowing that Sawyer killed a man--i.e., that the Others have knowledge of something that wouldn't have been in the papers.

I think smokey is the "leviathan" - which means "demon" in the biblical sense but is also the name of the book by the philospher Thomas Hobbes--the one philosopher related to all the others that have come up so far, and indeed who's ideas probably have the MOST to do with the island, yet who has curiously not been referenced yet.

I think this supernatural demon-like character is running the show and Ben is his minion. We just haven't seen smokey take the "Jacob" form yet. Think about this week's episode: "Jacob can heal her! Unless you don't have faith in him?" Jacob is almost always spoken of with a religious reverence.
