Arrow Smoking Smokie Psyche & Misc Quickies - RichPundit

TTSers:
if I may, have a few thoughts about our buddy Smokie as well as a few recent LOST quickies that I would like to share as part of my much needed LOST therapy.

Key speculation & canon facts:
· By technical definition, smoke is airborne particles
· Special ancient volcanic ash particles; Jacob's cabin ring of ash
· Special psyche connections with ash, particularly Ben
· Ben & Freighters covered in soot
· Ben losing power + Smokie seemingly weak against Keamy et al
· Ben summons Smokie from double secret ancient room; evolving ancient capability + Dharma technology
· Ash senses (Juliet flashes, Ecko images), analyzes, and may act (manifestations, Ecko death, pull Locke)
· Cerebus manual/automatic security system: Blast Door Map, Rousseau
· Volcano: Teacher Olivia Goodspeed, Geothermal Dharma Island power technology system
· Craters: Rousseau maps, black rocks, Barrack location, visual formations: Island, coastline
· Gemologist Casey [NB: TTSer Gemologist TalonTBo] for ash research
· Mycologist Doris for ash research: Mycology is the study of fungi and their use to humans as medicinals (e.g., penicillin), food (e.g., beer, wine, cheese, edible mushrooms) and psychoactive substances.

Smokie: Psyche-directed/powered volcanic ash. As I've speculatively posted b4 on our thread, our Island was formed via volcanic activity including cooking geological material forming ash with incredibly special properties, perhaps with alien materials, realizing access to almost limitless power that can manifest as: 1) psyche sensing, analyzing, and acting connection with human lifeforms, 2) the bending, twisting, and flattening of space-time (Casimir Effect/Wormholes/Vile Vortices) enabling both physical and consciousness space-time travel, and 3) combinations of both 1 & 2. This capability continues to evolve symbiotically with available and connected psyches since ancient times, thus a limited gene pool.

Ben is genetically connected with our Island via evolutionary processes as indicated above. Also, perhaps our Island is a sentient entity. Ben has the capability to enter the double-secret ancient "Summoning" room, psyche-ly connect with, release, and direct the special Island ash, and manifest Smokie according to his personal psyche connection and capability. Since Ben has recently repeatedly failed our Island as determined thru Jacob, his psyche connection/capability may have progressively diminished, perhaps why Keamy et al survived Smokie's attack. Alternatively, Keamy was already prepared to defend against Smokie via Island knowledge from Widmore and/or Ben's psyche directed non-lethal defense against Keamy et al as part of some other Ben plan ... Ben always has a plan.

· Implant technology facilitate psyche connection for "act" control
Ben rabbit heart · Activate Claire’s
· Jack sick; Juliet 2" too high; kick out Kate
· Locke kidney removal; walk on Island
· Tracking: Juliet see Alex/Kate/Sawyer remote jungle escape
· Control: reveal nothing, obey bizarre orders
· Superhero capabilities [Ethan; Juliet; Ben; Mikhail]
· Healing

Miscellaneous:

Implant Technology. Think that implant technology has been innovated by Dharma, perhaps others, that facilitate psyche Island connection, enhancement, and control of individuals. It is canon that Ben conned Sawyer with his rabbit implant and Ben tells Juliet that Claire's implant will be activate to help Juliet gain 815er credibility. Perhaps Jack has an implant that triggered his apparent appendix crisis, and Juliet either removed or deactivated it as evidenced by Jack's clear mistrust of Juliet by demanding Kate's presence, Jack's comment that Juliet is shaving 2 inches too high, Juliet forcefully causing Jack to be knocked out by Bernard, and Kate's removal from viewing the operation. Also think that Locke's kidney donation via Cooper was orchestrated to: 1) facilitate Island psyche connection enabling Locke to walk immediately post-815 crash via an implant & special Island communicated visions, and 2) enable Locke's survival from Ben's typically fatal gunshot over the open Dharma grave, i.e., patient overt course correction.

Multiple Languages. We have observed several Island characters except 815ers who conceal that they speak multiple languages including Blaugh, Naomi, Mikhail, and most recently Ben & Charlotte. Perhaps they are members of our Island's "collective psyche" in which the talents of all such as knowledge of multiple languages is shared by all members ... "We All Everybody", perhaps coupled with space-time travel and manipulation. My sense is that Ben entered the ancient double secret "Summoning" room facilitated with Dharma technology, actually spent considerable time in there summoning/releasing /directing Smokie, but seemed to be gone for only moments as perceived by Locke, Sawyer, Hurley, Claire, and Miles et al.

Raising Aaron. Also as a LOST thought, think it is possible that the couple in L.A. that Aussie Claire says has agreed to raise her Bah-bay as arranged by unknown others and why she is traveling on our 815 to L.A. may be ... Jack & Kate! Again, patient overt "course correction".

Ben's Special Baton Weapon. Think Ben's cool, effective baton weapon/tool slows or freezes space-time, i.e., "a kind of" mobile Orchid device, for nearby others while Ben gains the advantage such as moving to a better position to easily win and escape.

Thanks for your time, consideration, and fun therapy!

Lightbulb Sonic Fence Smokie Barrier & Barefooting - RichPundit

TTSers: some Memorial Weekend thoughts about some of our Island's possible psyche operation:

Smokie Fence. As I previously posted, think Smokie may be manifested from special Island volcanic ash particles via an Island-connected psyche, such as Ben's recent raging psyche when Keamy ruthlessly murdered Alex in violation of the understood Ben/Chucky rules. Therefore, perhaps the odd sonic fence is the only effective barrier force against Smokie's particles versus other more typical energy fence forms. For example, electrical zapping may not work cuz Smokie is manifested from uncharged volcanic particles or electrical energy absorbing particles. Or, heat decomposition may not work cuz Smokie's volcanic particles are naturally thermally resistant. And, Smokie can simply move over physical barriers since they are physically connected to our Island.

Also, it is odd that the sonic fence is effective at a fixed height. Perhaps Smokie's particles need to be psyche-connected close to the ground to manifest, particularly if Smokie is psyche-created from below the Island's surface, i.e., underground. Thus, the sonic fence may need not be high to be an effective barrier, plus non-Smokie entities can safely cross over the fence such as Kate, Locke, Sayid, and Rousseau.

Barefooting. If a collective psyche force exists on our Island and it originates underground operating upward thru our Island surface, physical contact with our Island may be important. This may explain why many are barefooted such as the kids and Others, and in particular, including Sawyer when Locke coerced him barefooted thru the jungle to kill Bad Dad Cooper in the Black Rock. Also, perhaps why Christian Shephard wears sneakers, i.e., to insulate from the Island ground connection for psyche independence. Perhaps barefooting allows better connection with our Island's "Collective Psyche".

Whew ... need another brat and beer!

Post The Economist: The Casimir Effect - RichPundit

fyi, just saw this Casimir Effect article in British "The Economist" newspaper (est 1843), and plan to weave it into our thread along with our previous Casimir Effect posts - RichPundit

The Casimir effect

Much ado about nothing

May 22nd 2008
From The Economist print edition

The Casimir effect, a curious consequence of quantum theory, may yet have practical applications

CAN something come of nothing? Philosophers debated that question for millennia before physics came up with the answer—and that answer is yes. For quantum theory has shown that a vacuum (ie, nothing) only appears to be empty space. Actually, it is full of virtual particles of matter and their anti-matter equivalents, which, in obedience to Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, flit in and out of existence so fast that they cannot usually be seen.
Alamy
Virtual percussion

However, in 1948, a Dutch physicist called Hendrik Casimir realised that in certain circumstances these particles would create an effect detectable in the macroscopic world that people inhabit. He imagined two metal plates so close together that the distance between them was comparable with the wavelengths of the virtual particles. (Another consequence of quantum theory is that all particles are simultaneously waves.) In these circumstances, he realised, the plates would be pushed together. That is because only particles with a wavelength smaller than the gap between the plates could appear in that gap, whereas particles of any wavelength could appear on the other sides of the plates. There would thus be more particles pushing in than pushing out, and the plates would clash together like a pair of tiny cymbals.
A neat idea. And in 1996, it was shown experimentally to be true. But so what? The answer is that now things in the computing industry have become so small that the Casimir force is starting to affect them. Computer engineers talk of “stiction”—the phenomenon of microscopic components sticking together—and spend a lot of time trying to figure out ways to avoid it. The Casimir effect is not the only cause of stiction, but it is an important one.
Engineers are now beginning to understand how Casimir forces depend on a device's design—an essential starting point if Casimir-related stiction is to be eliminated. A forthcoming paper in Physical Review Letters by Ho Bun Chan of the University of Florida, Gainesville, shows how the force changes when one of the flat metal plates imagined by Casimir is replaced with a corrugated silicon one. Dr Chan found that the effect's size depends on the spacing of the trenches. This suggests that if you designed microelectronic components carefully, you could reduce stiction.
Stiction is not, however, always a problem, and work is also going on to turn the Casimir effect from a liability to an asset, by using it in what are known as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). In 2001 Dr Chan and his collaborator Federico Capasso, who were then working at Bell Labs, published a paper showing one way to exploit the effect in MEMS. They made a tiny, gold-plated seesaw and slowly lowered a gold-plated ball towards it. At a distance of about 300 nanometres (a nanometre is a billionth of a metre), the seesaw began to tilt towards the ball. The effect was particularly strong at distances less than 150 nanometres. What Dr Chan and Dr Capasso had shown was that the Casimir force could be used to make a simple lever that might act as a tiny but accurate stress sensor in nanoscale machines.
What really excites researchers, though, is the idea that the Casimir effect may sometimes be repulsive. That would knock the problem of stiction firmly on the head and, according to Dr Capasso, would open up the possibility of making things like frictionless ball-bearings.
According to calculations made several decades ago by Evgeny Lif****z, a Russian physicist, Casimir repulsion should be possible—but you have to replace the vacuum with a fluid. The maths suggest that in order for this to happen, both liquid and plates must be made of carefully chosen substances. This is because the repulsion is caused by electromagnetic charges induced in the plates and the liquid by the virtual particles, and the forces produced by these charges depend on the materials you use.
As with Casimir's original suggestion, the gap between the theory and its practical demonstration has been a long one. But Dr Capasso, who is now at Harvard, and his student Jeremy Munday, have started investigating Lif****z's ideas.
They recently performed an experiment in which they looked at what happens when the plates are made of gold and the fluid is ethanol. Although they did not succeed in reversing the attractive Casimir effect completely, they did reduce it by 80%—a reduction in line with Lif****z's predictions. The right combination of materials, if it can be found, should therefore produce the desired reversal. That would be very good news for MEMS indeed.

Lightbulb Forbidden Planet: Casimir Virtual Particles Insulation Update - RichPundit

Happy "4th of July"!

If I may, I would like to begin another building phase of our Forbidden Planet theory thread by posting some recent Dilbert comic strips about "anti-Matter/World". My about 2hr drive back home from another great Summerfest party in Milwaukee ["World's Largest Music Festival"] helped to crystallize some recent posts and thoughts. As usual for me, my plan is to post a speculative framework then expand and support thru multiple dated edits ... hopefully not too annoying to "You All Everybody". Please always enjoy!

Wiki and a pile of other sources, albeit surprisingly not LOSTpedia, have much fascinating info about highly distinguished Paul Dirac's anti-world/particles and their properties, particularly space-time wormhole stabilization that enables space-time travel. Dirac is British ... our loong time #1 Ally!

imho, Dirac's hard and innovative work is perhaps strongly relevant to our LOST mystery adventure as partially revealed thru the Orchid Orientation film: "Island properties that help create a kind of Casimir Effect".
Previous | Start | Next

Perhaps the virtual particles/antiparticles involved in the Casimir Effect serve as the "insulation" material that keeps various space-time threads apart, thus stable as well as related/connected as defined by location, i.e., Daniel [prescient biblical prophet] Faraday's "Constant". As I previously posted on our thread, Virtual Particles are the extra particles left over beyond the minimum needed for any particular matter to exist and are ubiquitous in all matter ... perhaps a potential infinite energy source a la the ancient Krell race in Forbidden Planet.

NB fyi, think it is important to note that while the Casimir Effect can manifest as attraction, repulsion (e.g., our 815 splitting), and space-time wormhole stability/travel applications, its fundamental innovative concept concerns "Virtual Particles (VP)" ... perhaps the "negatively charged exotic" matter/particles articulated by Dr. Halliwax aka et al that "create a kind of Casimir Effect". [As a personal digression, this personal nit is somewhat analagous to Harvard's Clayton Christensen's "Disruptive Innovation (DI)" concept which, even according to Clay, is really only about the "Christensen Effect" DI application. DI is a much broader and more important concept than that conceptualized and marketed by now wealthy management guru Clay (ref: JPIMS, Jan07)].

Not sure whether our Island "exotic matter" does one or both of the following:
  • 1) emits virtual particles forming our Island's own space-time bubble between space-time continuums, and/or
  • 2) emits the electromagnetic (EM) frequency necessary to either moves/purges the insulating virtual particles between two space-time worlds causing them to interact ... even merge or integrate or collide. It may also perhaps have the ability to cause a consciousness to "get unstuck" from a particular space-time thread location like Desmond experienced after turning the Swan's fail safe key and showered with Purple Sky EM radiation.
Perhaps emitting virtual particles or the related EM frequency explains our observed Island phenomenal healing and prescience, noting that both manifestations importantly seem 2b gene pool tuned such as "Bad Dad". Also, seems that our Island exotic matter emitting virtual particles and/or their EM frequency would enable Dharma to conduct space-time experiments like #15 rabbits ... plus perhaps move our Island. Perhaps moving our Island concerns making our Island bubble unstuck from a particular location between space-time continuums, and then randomly float/stick to a new location between continuums. Perhaps why a Daniel "Constant" is needed. Perhaps the rabid fear that evokes the ruthless behaviours of several such as Ben is ultimately cuz our Island's exotic material was/is recklessly released for personal gain and/or science and/or for humanity, and is believed 2b expanding our bubble to dangerous proportions ... our Island bubble may burst! Also, a volcanic eruption exposing more exotic matter may be catastrophic for humanity.
Previous | Start | Next

[TTS Moderators: where are the two comic strips that were posted here for about 2 weeks???]

[IMG]file:///C:/Rich%20PersonalHold%20Jul08/LOST%20Apr08/LOST%20DilbertTopanga%20Lethatburlastbat%20Jul08%2 0320x240/LOST%20Dil%20anti%20SPF50%20insulation%20Jul08%20c p[/IMG]

Some characters are reckless in their behaviours such as extracting virtual particles resulting in bad happenings requiring Swan button pushing to contain. My continuing thought is that an ancient, alien meteor deposited "exotic material" deep inside the earth which was partially released thru volcanic eruption(s) that formed our special Island. Our Island may be a bubble between two or more worlds, black & white. Reckless individuals have risked our demise by extracting, exposing, and releasing it. The Swan station button pushing became critical to the temporary survival of humanity ... the button controlled the release of Island exotic matter. Perhaps if the exotic matter removes the insulating virtual matter between two worlds, the worlds cease to exist. Perhaps the frozen donkey wheel releases or exposes enough exotic matter to "unstuck" and "move" our Island along its space-time continuum.

Perhaps there are two distinct methods of space-time travel: consciousness and physical. Think someone physically brought Island exotic matter to our space-time world, and Daniel Faraday obtained it for his experiments plus his own consciousness space-time travel. Perhaps turning the frozen donkey wheel causes physical space-time travel which prohibits Island return like Ben. Perhaps our buddy Miles is psyche-connected with those who have consciousness space-time travel.

Some recent personal nits to ponder and integrate into our thread:
  • Why did Ben volunteer to turn the frozen donkey wheel and sarcastically speak to Jacob while looking upwards? Think Ben could have had Locke turn it if he chose. Continue to believe that Ben is really one of "the good ones", albeit Ben clearly did not care about Keamy's heart triggered bomb: "not my problem John".
  • Ben is clearly very knowledgeable about the Orchid station technology including the frozen donkey wheel, and denigrates Dharma as being sophomorically "silly".
  • Both Ben & Locke seem genetically tuned to our Island and connected to Jacob, my guess a technology linked to an entity ... not the Island entity itself, perhaps an alien Mom or Mom2b. Science reveals that genes can be turned on and off.
[Also, am perhaps the only LOST one who continues to believe that perhaps Ji Yeon's "Bad Dad" is Michael, same as "Special" Walt, plus with "grand-Bad Dad" Mr. Paik via Sun ... perhaps Walt's Mom died of the exotic Island "sickness" revealed by something's-not-right Rousseau. Think Ji Yeon's Island-tuned gene pool may rule our Island one day soon ... perhaps again! Please check out the supportive LOST episode "Delicate" music clip from Season 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huDIF--HmPU which was graciously introduced here on TTS by now lurking "good one": HLyons, and explored in our General Discussion: "LOST Music" and other TTS subforums in various threads. "Delicate" [flower Sun] still makes me teary-eyed and is a desktop shortcut 4me.
Ok ok, our LOST data clearly supports that Jin is Ji Yeon's father, in particular, Sun's baby looks Korean. However imho, not conclusive/canon, plus my LOST-y sense is that it is odd that seemingly evil Mr. Paik allowed impotent peasant Jin to even marry Sun, perhaps suggesting that he didn't want grandkids with Sun genes. Ok ok, I'm clearly LOST, and having much fun!]
  • Continue to believe that there exists a sea of consciousnesses that knows all including multiple languages, existed since ancient times, exists independent of our particular space-time continuum, manifests as visions/prescience/"whispers", and facilitates course corrections. Odd to me that my fav Juliet would submit to perhaps consciousness stream member: idiot Harper to violently stop Freighters Charlotte & Daniel from fatal Island gassing from the Tempest station which subsequently seems to be a lie ... Island gassing was intentionally prevented by Charlotte & Daniel as planned, eh?
  • Am intrigued with the concept speculation that LOST space-time travel is perhaps uniquely limited to both an individual's consciousness and lifespan (e.g. ref: pls see our LOST Collective Psyche member RedHeadedZombie).
  • Continue to sense that our LOST mystery adventure is fundamentally like the editing/reshooting of film clips (i.e., discrete space-time thread segments) that are spliced together when accepted by our Island "director" entity as our particular space-time world course corrected "film" ... a good thing assuming our "director" is one of "the good ones".
Whew, more to cum ... I'll be back!

Lightbulb LOST Island/Dharma Physics: String, Black Holes, ... - RichPundit

For our continuing LOST Collective Psyche pleasures:

enjoyed this physics book review this morning, and sensed some speculative LOST connections. In particular, am building on some of the posts on our Forbidden Planet thread and this past weekend's new Dharma transmission revealed at Comic-Con by a most lovable, most geeky-looking Nerd ... absolutely great writing, casting, direction, and editing!

Nerd: "Live ... on tape" and "Who gives a s**t!" and more - heh heh!

Will build through multiple dated edits as usual ... sorry, but too complex for one post sitting.

Physics. Some key speculative LOST elements: "A brief History of Time" (198, black hole radiation losing mass/lost information, know future, String Theory [discrete space-time bubbles or segments], and much more.

Dharma Transmission. Am particularly excited about several elements including: restart Dharma to "save us", dead for 30 years, future knowledge such as failed President Bush and our Internet, experimental transmission, Kerr Metric, redhead, possible Faraday voice, baby crying, "time is the essence", and more.

Quick point: our wicked pair [Darlton] repeatedly claim that "there are no time paradoxes ... the future can't be changed". A key point may be that the true future has not yet been revealed to our LOST Collective Psyche. SOooos speculatively, we may be observing multiple attempts in repeated time-loops to behave according to the true future that cannot be changed, hence break the nightmarish "save us" time-loops and move forward within the true future timeline ... realizing true and total "course correction". Why everyone has to return to our Island ... to behave as "All Everybody" are "suppose to" on our true future timeline.

[rich nits: genes, kids, comic novel "The Watchmen" with uncharted Island gene mutated psychics/crumbling monuments.]

Whew, this is both fun and great therapy for me ... I'll be back!

The Black Hole War
By Leonard Susskind
(Little, Brown, 470 pages, $27.99)
String theory, extra dimensions, multiple universes -- such controversies at the frontier of modern physics, however abstruse, seem to grab a lot of public attention these days. Leonard Susskind's "The Black Hole War" would appear at first glance to add yet another subject to this realm of provocative speculation. And the subtitle -- "My Battle With Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics" -- raises the possibility of intellectual combat as well.
But the linchpin of Mr. Susskind's book isn't new at all. It is a concept that has served as a foundation of physics since the time of Isaac Newton: the idea that information -- the data required to specify the state of the universe or some system within it -- is, like energy, neither created nor destroyed.
It is far from an obvious idea. Most of us have the feeling that we're gaining or losing information all the time. But physicists have long held that, if you knew everything about the universe, or about any other isolated system, you could predict its state precisely at any moment in the future. Such predictive power assumes a steady, unchanging informational supply: any new element, or lost one, would disrupt normal calculations and make the laws of physics powerless to see ahead.
The collision of new-fangled speculation with this venerable idea is due to Stephen Hawking, and that's where black holes come in. Black holes are regions of space in which gravity is so strong that nothing can escape; hence the claim that they are in some sense "black." In 1974, Mr. Hawking, now best-known for "A Brief History of Time" (198, showed that black holes aren't black at all: They give off radiation as if they were ordinary objects with some characteristic temperature. A black hole, Mr. Hawking showed, will lose mass as it radiates, and if we wait long enough it will completely disappear.
But there was a problem: The outgoing radiation, as far as anyone could tell, seemed unpredictable. In particular, there was nothing about the Hawking radiation that depended on what had gone into the black hole in the first place. The information that defined the state from which the black hole was made appeared to be simply lost.
The prospect of losing information presented a serious challenge to the way most physicists think that nature works, and "The Black Hole War" tells the story of the arguments that have taken place at international conferences and in the pages of major journals over the past three decades. Mr. Susskind, a professor at Stanford University, is one of the pioneers of string theory -- an ambitious attempt to unify gravity with the other forces of nature. He is famous within the physics community for his wit and storytelling abilities; they are pleasantly on display in "The Black Hole War."
The narrative begins in San Francisco (at a conference sponsored by Werner Erhard, the founder of EST) and skips through Manhattan, Britain and Holland. Mr. Susskind refers to Mr. Hawking as "Stephen the Bold, Stephen the Daredevil, Stephen the Destroyer," a man who had "ignited a fuse to a bundle of theoretical dynamite." He takes pains to reassure the readers along the way: "If you're a bit lost, don't worry. We are into the zone of things humans are not wired to easily comprehend."
Although many physicists worried themselves over the information-loss puzzle, Mr. Susskind describes a battle taking place primarily among three people: on one side, Mr. Hawking, who was willing to follow the implications of his discoveries and accept the astonishing idea that information is lost in the real world; on the other, the Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft and Mr. Susskind himself, who took the apparent loss of information as a sign that we were overlooking something important. It is a classic dilemma of scientific inquiry: When the odd or unexpected appears to be happening, do we radically rethink our accepted theories or attempt to resolve the puzzle within them?
To give a full account of the black-hole war, Mr. Susskind must explain quantum mechanics and general relativity, as well as an array of newer concepts, from string theory to the holographic principle. He doesn't shirk from this difficult task; "The Black Hole War" can be, at times, tough going. But it will richly reward anyone who takes the time to ponder the intricacies of its themes.
And Mr. Susskind enlivens his narrative with a wealth of anecdotes. Many young theoretical physicists in the early 1970s wondered whether black holes could somehow decay into other particles; but few had the pleasure, as Mr. Susskind did, of chatting about the idea over beers with the great physicist Richard Feynman. Mr. Susskind relates with gusto his pilgrimage to the University of Cambridge, in 1994, to show Mr. Hawking the error of his ways, spinning an analogy with Captain Ahab chasing the White Whale. Alas, Mr. Hawking was ill and not up to the demands of intense conversation. Mr. Susskind eventually finds himself in a local pub discussing the Black Hole of Calcutta with an elderly gentleman in a bow tie.
And what was the outcome of the black-hole war? A Susskind victory, it would appear. It seems that information is not lost, even when black holes evaporate. In 1997, a young theorist named Juan Maldacena showed how, in certain cases, questions in quantum gravity can be "translated" into equivalent questions in a different-looking theory, one that doesn't involve gravity at all -- a theory, moreover, in which it is perfectly clear that information is never lost. So we don't know exactly how information escapes when a black hole evaporates. But we can start with a black hole, translate it into the new theory (where we do know how to keep track of information), let the black hole "evaporate" and translate it back. A bit indirect, but the logic seems solid.
In 2004, Mr. Hawking admitted defeat, accepting that information is not lost. But victory in physics always leads to a new challenge. Mr. Susskind ends "The Black Hole War" by turning to cosmology and the expansion of the universe, about which there are still deep puzzles. He foresees another book when it all makes sense -- but doubts that it will be any time soon.
Mr. Carroll is a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology.

TTSers & TTS Lurkers [ Jacob sees you HLyons, ClueLess1der et al ... Welcome! ]:

aroused by Comic-Con's rabid excitement about next year's "Watchmen" movie, I've been reading the graphic novel series collection book to revel in its pleasures. I borrowed it from a gracious bestest friend who read it for a Georgia Tech literature class ... campus life is sweet!

WOW, am only maybe a quarter way thru it, and already the many LOST parallels are stunning to me! And, my GT buddy said that there are "mirror pages" about half way thru this book which may reflect our Black & White LOST mythology ... will post if it seems so to me. These parallels are exciting as well in that they portend possible future LOST mythology which helps to satisfy my rabid LOST mind ... much needed therapy.

Some Watchmen/LOST highlights:
  • Hugo Award: Watchmen is the only graphic novel to win this award [Wiki].
  • Conspiracies: "The Comedian" superhero Watchmen character's obsession. Thought about the Dharma, Widmore, Paik, Ben, Others, Rousseau, Locke, Cooper, etc. intertwined conspiracies [even reminded me of the "plans within plans" from a top shelf favourite book/movie/game: "Dune" (1965/1984)].
  • Attempted Murder (Chpt1/p3): Comedian is pushed thru a window in a tall building to prevent his revelation of a secret, "terrible Island" analagous to Cooper/Locke.
  • Island (Chpt2/p23): uncharted, scientists, genes, psychic mutations. HMmmm, sounds very familiar, and much more to come.
  • Raft: of course, Watchmen has the familiar makeshift raft constructed for escape that is destroyed by a monstrous shark.
  • Ozymandias (Adrian Veidt): A Watchmen who retires, and reaps a fortune marketing related character merchandise analagous to Dharma at our recent Comic-Con event. He also secretly rules the "terrible island" listed above. Plus, "his name recalls the famous poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, which takes as its theme the fleeting nature of empire" [Wiki] including HUGE crumbling statues perhaps analagous to our 4-Toe.
  • "Black Freighter" (Chpt3/p25): HMmmm, also sounds very familiar.
  • Intrinsic Field Chamber (Chpt4/p7): experiments related to specific theoretical physical laws of our Universe, analagous to our Island Orchid and other Dharma stations experimenting with the Valenzetti Equation, electromagnetic radiation, the Casimir Effect, the Kerr Metric, etc..
  • "Accident" (Chpt4/p7): Scientist Dr. Manhattan is the victim of an "Accident" which may be analagous to our Island "Incident".
  • Dr. Manhattan (Chpt4): All his body particles disperse from the "Accident", but his consciousness reconstitutes such that he has extraordinary talents like knowing events at all times and locations ... all at once.
This Watchmen event and consequence is perhaps analagous to our new S5 LOST story telling perspective: one "Mosaic" of pieces independent of time or location. This new LOST storytelling may be related to our Jeremy Bentham Easter Egg. "In 1785, philosopher Jeremy Bentham designed a circular prison building called a Panopticon, featuring a central observation tower surrounded by jail cells; all inmates were to be monitored around the clock without knowing who was watching or when. Bentham was inspired by a Parisian military school, with manageable supervision in mind." [JOpinionated ; D&Fs]. Our Collective Psyche that knows all past, present and future including all languages may manifest conceptually as a Panopticon. imho, one of our most fascinating related clues is when highly motivated Ben is struggling while pushing our Frozen Donkey Wheel ... highly distressed Ben painfully looks up and sarcastically says: "Hope this makes you happy Jacob".
Also, this Watchmen mythology is perhaps speculatively analagous to the existence of an Island Collective Psyche as I have previously posted which may manifest in part as our "Whispers". Perhaps it is the source of our 815ers' "visions", how Harper appears to Juliet to order her to stop Charlotte & Faraday at the Tempest, Walt appears to Locke while dying among our Dharma Purge skeltons, and perhaps how Jacob and several others seem to know future events and try to act on them. Plus, perhaps including our latest Dharma "Family Guy" video in which Dr. Pierre Cha[e]ng reveals he has a credible source of future information (Bush; Internet) ... his Jacob of our Island Collective Psyche of consciousnesses.
  • BRrrr Antarctica HQs: Analagous to Penny's LOST Arctic station with Portuguese monitors.
  • End of Humanity: a nuclear war with the Soviet Union is imminent cuz of Afghanistan that will destroy humanity. The Watchmen novel even includes a ticking Doomesday clock. This seems analagous to the UN-sponsored Brazilian [Portuguese] liaison between the US/Soviet Union after the Cuban Missle Crisis involving Alvar Hanso, the Valenzetti Equation, and the Dharma Initiative. [LOST Canon?].
Sorry, gotta run ... will be back!
[Am enjoying a cucumber garnished, Sake Martini on a beautiful Appleton day: perfect weather & Favre is in town. Am a bit drunk, my wife is suggesting our intimate jacuzzi & I'm a "Ho" [or "Slet" in Dutch] ... hope bartender Shaken[NotStirred]Bunny doesn't throw me out and spoil my Slet-ty pleasures!]
