Default Something don't add up

Let's assume to following to be true.

MIB can take the forms of other people, but they must be dead and the body must be on the island and not buried.

aka, christian in a coffin, later we see dead christian
aka, locke in a coffin, later we see a dead locke.

soooo assuming that the person must be dead and the body on the island and furthermore the body must not be burried.

then who did Ben see when he was a little boy beyond the fence. His mother appeared before him and told him to be patient. If the above is true, then it is highly unlikely that MIB took the form of Bens mom.

Now we also see that the form appears to be blocked by the sonic fence, could said sonic fence also block "the whispers"

This has been bothering me also. Ben's mother first appeared at his window, within the perimeter, so I don't think the fence is in play.

The scene when he encounters Richard is very interesting. When Ben says that he's seen his mother, Richard specifically asks little Ben if she is on the island. When Ben says no, Richard trusts him and seems to make a pact with him. I was thinking this could mean that Ben saw Jacob as his mother, not MIB. But at the Comic Con, the producers said Jacob has never appeared to the Losties as anyone but himself. Perhaps Ben is not considered a Lostie. Who knows?

I was reading that in one of the ABC pod casts, the producers said that Ben's mother was not smokey. They said it was an apparition, which could be lots of things. I didn't see the pod cast though.

Think about Eko. Smokey 'scanned' him and read his memories and saw things from his past. Later, when Eko runs off to find who he thinks is Yemi, we see a wisp of black smoke circle him, clearly indicating the upcoming scene involves smokey. the upcoming scene is where Eko is attacked by the three men he killed in the church. Those men didn't die on the island, nor were they buried on the island.

So im thinking smokey can impersonate people from the past of someone it scans, but to a much more limited degree. I mean Ben only saw his mom twice, once it was just her face for a second, the other time she said a couple words before vanishing. Smokey could have gotten the image from a picture Ben saw of his mother. Of course smokey had to have scanned him to know this. Either we haven't been shown this yet, or it happened very discreetly in ben's first flashback.

I always thought that the men who meet Eko in the jungle while he is looking for Yemmi are his so called partners who where on the plane, thus they would have been on the island dead in the plane? I guess I will have to go back and watch that episode again.

Sugar is right. It's the same men that appear in Eko's flashback in the same episode. Plus the alter boy appears. There seems to be three ways that the dead can appear: 1) physical form, 2) visions/apparations and 3) in dreams. To take physical form, I think the body needs to be on the island and unburied.

That's right, forgot about the alter boy. He definitely wasn't on the plane. What is going to be interesting is when MIB(in Locke's form) and Ben come out of the room where the have killed Jacob. They will run into the group assembled outside with the dead body of Locke.Don't think we have had that happen yet where the same person or form was in the same scene both dead and alive.

Another example would be Hurley's imaginary friend from Santa Rosa Dave. He was on the island as well, but I guess he was imaginary so he really don't count. But, I look at it now and say that was MIB using it as a way to kill Hurley since he is special and has something to do with they are coming.
