Jacob Hume? You think he's related to Desmond, like his father or something? Well, we don't know who Desmond's father is, so i guess it's possible, but why?

Because Desmond is special, and he never expressly stated what happened to his father. Of all the major losties we know the least about his family, all we've had is 'had to look after my 4 brothers after my father...'. There are lots of other Humes out there to find- surely he must be special for a reason- could it be hereditary?

Desmond is special because he turned the failsafe key and was exposed to all that energy that the swan was keeping contained. It's not hereditary. Thats part of the reason i think Jack could be jacob. Desmond+Swan Energy=special Jack+Hydrogen bomb+swan energy= ?????????

Also, how is it that Richard knows island secrets back in '77 (healing ben) , might or might not know Jacob initially (until , like you stated, Locke comes time skipping along blabbing about Jacob), but does not know anything pertaining to the wheel or the Islands ability to "move" when he asks John about his disappearing act.

We've never been explicitly told why desmond is special, and I've always felt that as 'who is your father and what's your problem with him?' is the main question answered in flashbacks I feel we've been distracted away from Desmond's family by Widmore and why he left the army. Of course, we don't know who Juliet's father is either...

I agree that daddy issues are a big theme in lost, and i agree that Desmonds dad could end up being an important character introduced later, but.... Desmond didn't do anything 'special' in his life, illustrated by Douchebag Widmore, until he landed on the island. Further more, he didn't do anything 'special' on the island in the hatch (besides saving the world of course Then he turns the failsafe key and he blacks out...... ........and he wakes up off the island with Penny. His mind stays in that time period for a while, and during that time he can act outside the rules of WHH. Like when he buys the ring that he 'wasn't supposed to buy'. He flashes back to the island, running bucknaked through the jungle till Hurley finds him. And oh yeah he can see the future now. I'm saying, obviously turning the failsafe key did something to him. Since he displayed no 'special' abilities (aside owning Jack at Stadium Stairs) that we know of. Until the moment he turns the key. Then his mind is in his past and he can see the future and actually delay death. Charlie was supposed to die like three times. Desmond actually changed everything. it all came to him the moment he woke up after the implosion

I agree that his power was activated by the hatch implosion (and it ain't a cooler way to gain a supernatural power than an eclipse!?) but charles seemingly wanted him on that island for some purpose, maybe he's always been special. well to ellie he would be if she has the journal

Charles reason for wanting him on the island is the same as Ellie's. They know exactly whats supposed to happen. With a little help from Faraday's journal, of course. And i completely agree with you that Charles wanted Desmond on the island, but the reason i think that, is because Widmore knows what happens and he has to play time-cop (just like Faraday's mom) to make sure Desmond becomes special i.e. turn the key.

I just have to say that your theory would have been 5,000% more entertaining than the shoddy piece of storytelling we were subjected to tonight. I am so disgusted by this combo episode, it's not even funny.
