Default Amy = Amelia

In "A Tale of Two Cities" we meet an older lady, an Other named Amelia, at Juliette's book club. She is the first to arrive at Juliette's house, and sees Ethan outside fixing something. She jokingly chastises him, telling him to hurry up and finish fixing the plumbing. Later in the scene, Juliette is about to show Amelia Ben's xrays (the ones that showed his tumor) but they get interrupted. During the book club, in which they are discussing Carrie, Amelia has a strange smirk on her face as Juliette and Adam argue about the book. (The novel, Carrie, ends with a letter from a woman named Amelia Jenks, to her sister Sandra Jenks, in which Amelia talks about how she fears her daughter Annie Jenks has telekenetic powers.)

I think Amelia is Amy from 1977, all grown up. Now that we know Ethan's mother is Amy, and that she was on the Island, it makes sense that she would not have been killed in the Purge. So, if she stayed on Island as an Other, it would seem to me that this Amelia character fits the bill. She has reddish brown hair and a similar face, although obviously much older (about 30 years older, sure). The seemingly innocent scene before where she tells Ethan to speed up his work, now clearly looks like a mother chiding her son.

Amy has Ethan in 1977. Sometime in between then and the Purge, Ben gets him to join his side and be an Other working against dharma. Then either because she is in on the plot, or just because she's Momma Rom, she is spared in the Purge and joins the Others. Better yet...was Amy an Other the whole time? Is she one of their "plants," like Ethan later would be, designed to infiltrate Dharma (or whatever outside group happens to be there) from within? I have a feeling her character has a LOT more story to come.

If Amelia is Amy, is the Carrie reference supposed to be a clue that she is Annie's mother? Will we see little Annie be born on the Island? Is she already born, and we just haven't met her yet? Is she going to end up having telekentic powers, sort of like Walt?

In any case, unless this Amelia person ends up being Amy, or is otherwise important, I don't know why Juliette would have been ready to show her Ben's xrays. It was obviously a big secret, so to me, Amelia was either going to be shown because 1) she is Annie's mother, and Juliette is sharing with her because of Ben's history with Annie, or 2) Amelia is Amy, a woman very much like Juliette, a normal woman who got sucked into this world for reasons beyond her power so Juliette feels close to her.

Good grief, thank you for taking a comment I made in a previous thread, researching it and analysing it so thoroughly! I'm pretty sure Stuart Radzinsky was spared from the purge as well, as Inman seemingly came to the island after that and was working with him. Where he fits into this I don't know, but Ethans birth was clearly there to scream 'Ben was not the only defectee'.
So, anyone still think Amy's Amelia Earhart?

It comes down to whether we believe "whatever happened, happened" or that the 815ers are changing things up. If their loop back in time has always existed and has no impact on the future, then erikau's scenario could be true. But what if they changed the future by saving Amy from the Others, who were about to kidnap her when the 815ers showed up? If they had not been there, Amy would have been taken then and maybe had someone else's baby later. She would have called him Ethan because she likes the name. [I think someone else brought this up before]. But either way, Amy could still be Amelia. If the timeline has changed, though, she and alternate Ethan may have a very different future.

g9rfan, I'm actually the one that brought that up as well hahahaha.

I DO think that Amy would have been kidnapped by the Others if Sawyer had not been there...they were putting a bag over her head, like they did to Kate, Jack and Sawyer before they were kidnapped. Either way then, you see, she would have ended up being an "Other." Originally, in 1977 #1...it happened because she was kidnapped. In 1977 #2, it happens because Sawyer saves her, causing her to have Ethan, who will become an Other and save her in the Purge. See? Either scenario would have ended up with Amy being an Other, the first time around because she was taken, the second time around because she is the mother of an Other haha.

Annie has to already be around somewhere, as the 12 year age gap is creepy even by bens standards!
I think the purge only affected those that had started it, though Sayid's the only one who know's that Dharma started the whole thing (I expect that's why they built a poisonous gas station in the first place). By this reckoning the reason Ben seemed upset at Horace's death is because Ben gave him- a good person- the chance to continue living peacefully, but he was turned by people like Radzinsky toward the 'gas 'em all' approach- an approach which ultimately resulted in his downfall.

Sorry, the point i was trying to make was that possibly a whole heap of Dharma employees were possibly spared as Ben was acting as an Ethan style spy, whittling out the good people so the purge was more a purge of the bad than Dharma itself
