Default Time On The Island -- My theory

My overall theory of the island is this:

Time moves much more quickly on the island than it does off the island. This is why when we are first introduced to Juliet and she is shown the picture of the pregnant woman's uterus she think the woman is 70 when she is in fact 25 -- being on the island and living at the accelerated speed of time.

But because time is moving faster it accelerates the aging process. I would not be surprised to learn that people like Ben -- who have been on the island all their life -- are much younger than they actually appear. Ben might be only 19 despite appearing 40-ish.

This may also be what happens with the pregnant women -- the fetuses develop too quickly in too short an amount of time and this causes the death of the mother. As well, despite looking healthy their internal organ structure is that of a 75 year old woman -- not very healthy for carrying a baby.

So with all that said -- my guess for the big Naomi reveal about the plane.

Naomi: "But... Oceanic flight 815 crashed 10 years ago."

Boom

LOST

why would time be acclerated?? the uterus looked like it was from a 70-year old woman becuase it was badly ravaged and wounded, not aged. and it walt comes back, sure he's gonna look older becuase THE ACTOR IS, the other characters don't show it becuase they are adults, not kids.

Yeah, I like it ... would explain Richard telling Juliet "You'll be surprised how quickly time goes by on the island" right before she drank the OJ.

Default Time on the Island

I agree with Coaster that, from a non-island inhabitant's perspective, the missing plane/crash reporting would have occurred relatively recently - meaning far less than the 90 or so days the survivors have experienced. It would have been ten years only if time moved much more slowly on the island.

One flaw in the theory would be the communication with the outside world. We have witnessed first-hand the viewing of the televised news reports of the missing flight from the island itself, and I don't think they were watching a History Channel documentary.

There has also been discussion from 'the Others' of being able to communicate outside the island. I'm no engineer, but I'm not sure it would be possible to maintain two-way communication with divergent time streams.

I do not think that this would be a paradox. Time is moving very fast on the island -- so one day on the island might be equivalent to a month off of it.

The time is still passing more quickly on the island -- it just feels slower.

Agree with "Gartism" that the off-Island Richard2Juliet comment about how fast time goes by on the Island strongly supports that time moves faster on our Island. I also agree with "InFields" that the Others seem to communicate with the outside world in real-time.

Perhaps the Island causes beings with psyches to age faster in real-time! Or in other words, increases the being's metabolism, perhaps including their psyche, resulting in wondrous superhero-like benefits, both physically and mentally.

Perhaps Ben is much younger than he appears as someone suggested. Perhaps Alex will age faster than Jack, supporting someone's idea that Alex and Jack will soon become the Island's royalty replacing Ben and his now deceased wife. JACOB may not be happy that Ben's wife got pregnant ... "Forbidden" ... perhaps resulting in Ben's surprising and incredibly2Ben, frightening tumor. Ben may be commanded by JACOB, perhaps a computer-like device, perhaps ancient. JACOB may have already chosen Jack and Alex to replace Ben, and has commanded: "Make it so", perhaps thru Dharma implants.

Perhaps using the Island/Dharma technology mostly provides wondrous and superhero-like benefits at the cost of rapid aging ...perhaps sometimes acting unintentionally ... perhaps thru implants. If so, methinks that Locke's going get old very, very fast - RichPundit
