Default Rich Pundit's Forbidden Planet Theory

This Theory was sent in by a reader for your consideration:

"1956 Forbidden Planet" LOST theory.

Think we can all together build on this core theory, explain everything, and even innovate new stuff! Brief, I'll try (Yoda).

"Forbidden Planet" was released in 1956, and starred Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon, ... Leslie Neilsen (!), and Robbie the Robot. The planet had a natural, infinite energy source which the Krell, an ancient race, leveraged with their technology. One device measured and developed the psyche of Krell children. This device could also create a form of whatever you imagined such as Altar (Anne Francis).

Unknowing to the Krell, the device also tapped the subconcious, particularly evil cognitions, and independently acted on them, particularly when used by Adults. Why both the Krell and the planet were self-destroyed.

Perhaps our Island has a natural, infinite energy source that Dharma technology tapped, probably to amplify good. It also unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) tapped evil subconscious cognitions, and acts on them. Why "The Others" chant they are the good guys for survival. Energy takes many forms such as purple light, magnetic, Smokey, it even can change time! A copper coil wrapped nail is non-magnetic until a current is applied ... how pinball machines work. Energy changes form, and perhaps the numbers are the key energy states/levels that Dharma discovered to control/tap the Island energy. Perhaps new or different numbers can cause dramatic better, or worse, results.

Maybe the independent, Dharma technology tapping the Island energy source senses psyches, even globally, and sometimes acts. Perhaps "Bad Dads" cause strong psyches that are more easily sensed, connected, and acted upon that resulted with our select passenger group. Dharma+ "recruited" needed folks for various purposes such as Juliet, Desmond, Patchy, etc., and holds them captive by threatening acting on their or their relation's subconcious fears. Perhaps Ben/French's daughter's boyfriend is a nasty example.

Also, since kids are mostly innocent and may be particularly sensitive to Dharma technology/Island, they provide safety, but their psyches are more greatly independently tapped by Dharma technology/Island and acted on. So, Walt reads polar bear comic, we have a polar bear. Locke seems a genuinely good guy, so he can walk thanks to sensing and acting technology/Island, but Ben not so much. Ben controls folks with threatened worse fears, why the "box" created Locke's "Bad Dad" for Ben to control Locke.

The purge is when some Dharma folks became sort of religiously against the evil being created and applied, and some escaped into hiding (French) or made a deal like Patchy. The Others won with their armed police, and now control access to the Dharma technology, though they can't control or undersatnd it completely.

Would like to free group innovate and build on this core theoretical framework. If interested, please let me know.

Talking Minor "Forbidden Planet" Theory Update - RichPundit

Tx very much ... you folks are great!

I've updated my relatively brief summary of my foundational LOST theory from which we can all build … or destroy:

"1956 Forbidden Planet" LOST theory:

Think we can all together build on this core theory, explain everything, and even predict/innovate new stuff!

Brief, I'll try (Yoda).

"Forbidden Planet" was released in 1956, and starred Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielsen (!), and Robbie the Robot. The planet had a natural, almost infinite energy source which the Krell, an ancient race, leveraged with their technology. One device measured and developed the psyche of Krell children. This device could also create a form of whatever you imagined such as Altar (Anne Francis). HMmmm …

Unknowing to the Krell, the device also tapped the subconscious (Id), particularly evil cognitions, and independently acted on them, particularly when used by Adults. It is why both the Krell and the planet were self-destroyed.

Perhaps our favorite Island has a natural, unique energy source that Dharma technology tapped, probably to explore animal/human psyches to amplify good, perhaps control (e.g., dolphins). Their technology also unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) tapped evil subconscious cognitions, and acts on them, frequently independently of the technologists. Why "The Others" chant they are the good guys cuz necessary for their survival.

Energy takes/changes into many forms such as purple light, magnetic, Smokey, human/animal forms … it even can change time depending on the applied technology! For example, a copper coil wrapped nail is non-magnetic until a current is applied ... how pinball machines work. Energy, both naturally and unnaturally, changes form. Perhaps the numbers are the key energy states/levels (or Dharma computer input codes) that Dharma discovered to control/tap the Island’s unique energy. Perhaps new or different numbers can cause dramatic better and/or worse results … a current active Island project.

Maybe the Dharma technology tapping the Island energy source senses psyches, both independently and dependently - even globally, and sometimes acts. Perhaps "Bad Dads" cause strong psyches that are more easily sensed, connected, and acted upon that resulted with our select passenger group, plus may explain why “Bad Dads” are an Island/technologist focus. Dharma+ recruited/recruits needed folks such as Juliet, Desmond, Patchy, etc. for various purposes, and holds them captive by threatening to act on their or their relation's subconscious fears. Perhaps Ben/French's daughter's boyfriend is a nasty example, Juliet is compliant, and why French Danielle avoids her Alex.

Also, since kids are mostly innocent/good, and they may be particularly sensitive to Dharma technology/Island, they may provide some safety for the exploration, maintenance, and operation of Dharma technology. And, their good psyches may be more greatly independently tapped by Dharma technology/Island and acted on. SOooo, Walt reads a polar bear comic, we have a polar bear. Locke seems a genuinely good guy, so he can walk thanks to the sensing and acting technology/Island … but Ben not so much, so he cannot walk at least yet.

Ben controls folks with threatened worse fears, why his "box" created Locke's "Bad Dad" for Ben to control Locke. Ben may be an original innocent kid who more safely explored, maintained, and operated Dharma technology, but he has naturally aged, making him less useful. Also, the need for Island surgeons perhaps suggests the application of animal/human implants that connect/amplify with Dharma technology and the Island’s unique energy source.

The purge may have been when some Dharma folks became sort of religiously against the observed evil being created and applied. These folks adopted some existing religious-like beliefs/practices, and they were purged with some escaping into hiding (French) or made a deal like Patchy. The Others executed the purge with their armed police, and now control at least some of the access to the Dharma technology, though they can't control or understand it completely.

Whew! Sorry for this loooong email. I have much more, but will stop here for your comfort.

Would like to free group innovate and build on this core theoretical LOST framework if it makes sense to you and/or others. Also, please ask any burning question or comment you have, and I think I can suggest possible answers consistent with this "Forbidden Planet" LOST theory.

If interested, please let me know.

Lightbulb "Forbidden Planet" LOST Theory: Why Ben Brands Juliet

For LOST Fan(atic)s like me:

I would like to propose a possible LOST explanation relating to Ben’s decision to brand Juliet that is consistent with, and builds on, our “Forbidden Planet” theory. As always, your thoughts and comments, particularly critiques, are always much appreciated.

Please post your burning questions for all, then let's together explain and weave our "Forbidden Planet" thread.

Namaste – RichPundit

“Forbidden Planet” LOST theory: Ben Brands Juliet

Our favorite Island has a unique energy source that can sense and analyze living psyches, and then may act. This core Island energy source is either natural or unnatural (religious, mystic, technology, or alien?) or both, and is focused on mostly higher order animal psyches such as dolphins and humans (maybe spiders, even plants). The Island with Dharma technology independently strongly senses intense cognitions, either innocent or evil, analyzes, and then may act on them ... not as Dharma intended, and now desperately fears.

The Island has independently sensed/analyzed psyches, then sometimes acted for a very long time as evidenced by the weird-toed statues, and the Black Rock. The Black Rock suggests pirates, most likely with strong evil cognitions and really “Bad Dad” issues, perhaps in the 1600’s. This is when Sin City, Jamaica with Governor Captain Morgan was the largest and richest city in the New World beyond even Boston, Philly, or New York. Not sure if that type of dynamite is 1600ish, but explosives were used by pirates (Johnny Depp). This loong Island history suggests that obtaining knowledge of the Island’s unique sensing/analyzing/acting power is possible including by the DeGroots and Hanso Industries, perhaps from some discovered and shared/bought writings or an Island escapee/survivor or Island native who has served the Island for many generations. Or perhaps, the Island was discovered thru modern sensing technology like magnetic, optical, infrared, etc. … wasn’t the CIA involved, maybe taxpayer monies?

Dharma was created to explore, enhance, and exploit the Island’s unique powers, probably for good purposes, and created technology that further leveraged/enhanced the Island’s sensing, analyzing, and acting capabilities. Dharma probably began developing technologies and devices working with animals such as dolphins and bears with the purpose of exploring, amplifying, enhancing, and controlling their primitive psyches for various purposes. Perhaps Dharma invented/developed implant devices to help do this. This is why Dharma needs surgeons such as Jack and Ethan ROM.

Btw, as you know, the producers have stated that LOST character names are significant. Perhaps “ROM” means “Read Only Memory” which suggests that Ethan may not always act independently, and that he may be under the control of something and/or someone. Perhaps Ben is one such someone, and/or perhaps a computer-like device that after the sensing and analysis of particular psyches, issues commands to: other Dharma technology devices that generate forms like Smokey, and to folks like Ethan to act in specific ways. Ethan did what he was commanded to do. Perhaps JACOB is a computer-like technology device. And, perhaps now, folks like John Locke are controlled somewhat by JACOB and/or Ben. Perhaps Ben has limited control of JACOB. Societies controlled by an independent computer-like device is a looong time SciFi story plot, e.g., Tron, Blade Runner, The Day the Earth Stood Still (Gort), Forbidden Planet (Krell technology), Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek, X-Files, The Avengers, etc.. Maybe Locke now has an implant designed specifically for him, perhaps as commanded by JACOB.

Perhaps Ben as an innocent kid, was made to explore, develop, operate, and maintain Dharma devices (perhaps even JACOB), because he provided a higher level of safety with his kid-like psyche from unintended acts by the Island Technology. Some, if not all adults have deep, intense, evil cognitions that may be more easily sensed by the Island, analyzed, then perhaps respond disastrously, perhaps even killing folks like Ecko.

Ben may have a Dharma implant that connects with the Island, and that Jack may have discovered it during Ben’s surgery. Perhaps if we really saw Ben’s x-rays, we could see the implant. Ben’s deadly growth may have resulted from the implant. Jack may have removed the implant, and weakened Ben such that now he can’t heal to walk and/or can’t control others as well as b4. Other folks may have specific types of implant technology that help Ben and/or JACOB control them for specific purposes, perhaps by sensing their deep fears and then acting on them such as Locke’s “Bad Dad”. Alex may be controlled by Ben thru his control of her boyfriend, and Danielle avoids Alex for a similar reason. There may be many different kinds of implants for various purposes, and/or customized for an individual’s psyche, anatomy, and/or other unique characteristics.

Juliet may have been branded because she committed murder which the Island would strongly sense, and then negatively act. Perhaps the spinal cord location of the brand is significant. The brand may be a clear warning to an implant surgeon, not to implant because it would be highly dangerous to all. Interestingly, everyone including Juliet seems seriously concerned that Juliet murdered an Other, but all seemed to quickly agree that she should be branded, it made good sense ... except Jack, of course, who is out-of-the-information-loop, so he is outraged.

Perhaps Juliet was handcuffed to Kate, and dropped outside the protective fence to attract Smokey. Juliet’s pain from her shoulder dislocation may have been quickly sensed by a Dharma device which then generated Smokey resulting in the sensing, then attack. The light flashes may be Smokey’s sensing technology to find Juliet and scan her psyche for specific cognitions, perhaps intense evil or love. Or perhaps, Smokey was specifically and intentionally commanded, perhaps by Ben, to sense intense murderer cognitions.

Also, Juliet’s superhuman talents (speed, strength, agility) suggest positive Dharma technology benefits. However, the entire event may be a clever Ben-way of gaining Kate’s trust of Juliet for a specific Ben or JACOB purpose.

Whew, I am again sorry for my looong explanation … my LOST obsession is much fun for me! I have much more if anyone is interested. Please share your thoughts.

Question Forbidden Planet Theory: Island Technical Needs? RichPundit

Fellow Losties: I would like to explore what technical needs the Island/Dharma Technology seems to have/had actively sought to help determine what was/is needed to function, perhaps as commanded by JACOB.

Would someone please share with me the technical details relating to both our French Woman Danielle and Ruskie Patchy, and maybe a few others selected by the Island? Danielle seems to have both electrical (tortured Sayid) and communication (changed number message) skills, while I think that Afganistan-assigned Patchy was at least a communications expert.

In particular, what was the purpose or function of Danielle's research team?

Much appreciated! Tx - RichPundit

Default A Theory With LEGS!

RichPundit, I do believe this theory has some serious legs - only because I've long suspected that whatever enables Locke to walk on the island was implanted when his kidney was removed or after Cooper pushed him out the window......in Ben's tumor (not to mention Jack's strategic incision to....Ben's 'kidney sac') and Juliet's branding, TPTB are giving us many clues about how Mittelwerk operates and the Island works: mechanistically (although saying that, there is still a major philosophical debate about whether computer technology could soon resemble the realm of metaphysics and mimic how the universe functions.....) Could Cooper have been ordered to fit John with something that would render him 'worthy' of, or otherwise facilitate communion with, the island - possibly as a trade-off for his kidney? It's interesting that, to the best of my knowledge, nobody has yet pointed out how this past week's episode title is identical to that of the best-selling Christian book series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, Left Behind - and I don't think that it's a coincidence, especially on this show. With this in mind, we can then see that the Others left the barracks in anticipation of an Armageddon-like confrontation with an as-yet-unidentified threat, excluding the unworthy Kate, Juliet, Jack and Sayid from their Rapture, whatever form that might take - but John WAS allowed to accompany them, reinforcing your theory mightily, in particular the suspicion that the Others are a fundamentalist religious reaction to DHARMA's work and Benjamin Linus deGroot recruited by an original group of them in much the same way Locke may have been for reasons unknown as well.....I have a feeling the next 4 episodes are going to indeed blow people's minds.

Thumbs up Ogam5's Forbidden Planet Implant Genius - RichPundit

Wow Ogam5 ... well, you did!

I had only thought of devices implanted in animals/humans on the Island, but you did well to expand to off-Island implants.

Perhaps Locke didn't have a kidney removed, and Cooper still has his original.

Bad Dad Cooper would easily be attracted to JACOB/Ben/Dharma/Hanso+ schemes, particularly if money was involved. Perhaps the whole event was staged so that an Island/Dharma-type device could be implanted in Locke. And, Locke may have survived his Cooper-pushed fall cuz his implant also yields benefits similar to Juliet's seemingly special superpower talents. Also may explain why Locke can walk, and seems increasingly connected to our Island.

Maybe Ben knows this, sees great implant success in Locke, so wants to understand better and perhaps leverage/apply for some Ben/JACOB purpose. Maybe other 815 passengers already have implants that guided them to flight 815. Perhaps the success of implants is variable.

Excellent thinking Ogam5 ... please keep it coming - RichPundit

Widmore/Hanso: suggest that you Wikipedia "Forbidden Planet", and perhaps rent the 1956 movie. I've read many of your Posts, and there is no doubt that you will enjoy very much!

The basic related elements are that there exists an unique energy source on the Island that can independently sense, analyze, and act on animal/human psyches (maybe spiders and plants). This energy source was discovered, then Dharma technology was innovated to exploit it, and this probably involved implant and other devices, probably beginning with dolphins, then progressing to humans.

Unintentionally, at least at first, the Dharma technology also independently sensed intense psyche elements, such as innocent kids and Bad Dads, and acted on them. On Forbidden Planet, the scientist Morbius had unconscious evil cognitions about the military guys hitting on his innocent daughter Altara. When Morbius slept, the Krell technology powered by the planet's vast energy source, independently created a monster to destroy the military guys (Leslie Nielson). So on our Island for example, Smokey is created to attack evil cognitions (Ecko). Why "The Others" chant that they are the good guys, and murder is unacceptable ... or, they may all die, perhaps all of us!

Much follows from these elements.

Trust this helps. Please post your thoughts, comments, and questions - RichPundit
