I thought he was a thinly veiled reference to Jacob Marley, as we've had desmond mention 'every glorious word dickens ever wrote' in season 2, and jack eyeing up a suspiciously empty set of shackles on the black rock way back in season 1. i hope it turns out it was ben and richard playing tricks on people so they wouldn't find out his real boss was charles widmore- they both seem to be racing towards the same goal whilst squabbling like -albeit very psychotic- siblings
