Default 05/07 - LOST to end in 2010

Quote:
The end is in sight for ABC's acclaimed island mystery Lost, but fans will have to wait until 2010 for all the answers.

In a highly unusual move, the network announces plans today to end the show after three more shortened seasons of 16 episodes each. The episodes will air consecutively, repeat-free, from February to May.

Thought this deserved its own thread since its an enormous development (and a highly controversial one at that). For my part, I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. I'll reserve judgement for now, and of course I am in it until the end no matter what. But I have to say, the widespread rumors that we were in it for 5 seasons felt "right". It's not so much the number of seasons remaining that bothers me (as the episode count will end up being about the same as had there been 5 full seasons). It's the stretch of time over which it will be dragged out. We're looking at a 2010 conclusion with 8 month hiatuses. I'm not so keen on that.

Anyhoo discuss...

Damn The Man... err.. the men.

I think that's the problem. Most of us will still watch. If we had any balls though, we'd boycott all the shows that they put on in the interim.

I don't watch TV outside of Jeopardy, Lost, and House, so I already sort of am boycotting everything else. I do think this is too many episodes, and definitely too long a stretch of time. I think ABC has set themselves up to cancel Lost after two of those three seasons, and we're going to suffer for it. I think the answers are less likely to come now.

Such a huge stretch with nothing to watch. I would have much preferred them to air Lost continuously in an on-and-off fashion, with some other interesting serial drama in the timeslot when Lost is off. The producers have long joked about season 7 being the zombie season, and now their timing is bringing them pretty close to that.

Will they have the option to cancel the show? I mean, I realize that the network can do pretty much whatever they want, but man would it suck to be left without the answers on this one. Have they signed some sort of contract that says 3 more short seasons for sure? Is this set in stone?

There are no contracts on this planet that are ever 'set in stone'. The only question is whether it becomes more expensive to dump the contract or fulfill it.

Thing is.. even if it is fulfilled ABC can air them however they like. If the show is underperforming they can burn them off in whatever retarded timeslot they deem fit. So cancelled? No.. but as good as.

I also fully expect that after season 4 they are going to compare ratings/dvd sales and make a determination about whether to hold on to season 6. If they choose not to they'll simply make a deal with the producers to up the production budget a bit for season 5 in compensation... and have them finish out the story in 5 seasons.. and get their heavy hitters DL/CC off creating new shows.

Damon Lindelof admitted in the USA today article that they make it up as they go along... so fitting that vision in 2 seasons as opposed to 3 makes no difference. The final stories will just be broken over a 16 episode set rather than 32, with the last episodes of either setup finishing up the actual story.

There really is no silver lining to this chop job.
