It is a tragity that Lennie Briscoe wasn't even on the list! Jerry Orbach took a part in an ensemble show and turned him into a beloved character whom we thought of as a main character even though he was only on for half of each of the episodes. L&O's ratings fell after his departure even though characters had come and gone over the years with little change in viewership. Such a great character and the best detective ever...his one-liners were the best!

Columbo rules.Adrian Monk may be ingenius and awesome,but only because he is copiing Columbo,Monk shows much brilliance,but it is just the same brilliant that Columbo has.Monk show us nothing new,than his OCD,but in detective work he is just coly of Columbo,yet Columbo is bit better,he was more bumbling!So Columbo and Monk are only 2 candidates for me,but betwen these two i dont hasitate to choose Columbo!!!!!
The Lt.Columbo is simply the best
