Default Locke

Ok, I am probably going to ramble here, but sometimes you have to just vent things out. I have been going back and watching season 1, and really paying attention to Locke and this actions and such. I just can't figure out how he knows the things he does at such an early stage in the show unless he has been there before, or early on he is not the real Locke? Like when Jack goes off chasing after his dad in White Rabbit, Locke tells Kate and Sayid that he knows where to find him, and magically when Jack falls over the cliff, who is there to lend a helping hand. Or when he hits Boone over the head and ties him up so smokey can come along and show him his vision. How does Locke know this will happen. My thought is could it be possible that Locke on island is really MIB early on, and then sometime over the seasons he switches back? I know this is probably out there and not making sense, but to me he acts early on allot like Locke of Season 5 being all confident and all. Now I know is seasons 2-4 he at times seems to lose his way, but not early on in season 1. This is kind of how he manipulated Locke and Richard and Ben in Follow the Leader where he went back in time and helped Locke along. Could MIB have been doing this stepping in at times all along. In Fire and water, when Boone was tied up and all, Locke was seen by Sayid in the jungle(when he gave Sayid the compass) and Jack on the beach. Each asked had he seen Boone, or about the hunting. Could the real Locke have been telling the truth in that he hadn't seen Boone, but MIB Locke been doing those things?

Hey Lost-in-VA,

I'm with you on Locke seemingly knowing about the future and having cool skills odd for a desk jockey in a box factory, home inspector and retail toy clerk. Locke seems to already have experienced and learned on our wondrous Island, perhaps repeatedly. However, without some core key memories, most likely caused by his time shifting ... like when he tells Richard to quickly help fix Locke's leg bullet wound.

How about Jacob (good guy imho) and MIB (not-so-good guy imho) are competing by moving chess-like pieces of our world throughout time with the added complication that each piece can be modified and removed/inserted into any context, plus repeat this process for "progress". The inserted modified piece is "simply" the same character with a different set of experiences, hence knowledge and other capabilities.

Perhaps MIB believes humanity is fatally flawed and is doomed no matter what Jacob does to help save, while Jacob believes humanity is flawed but of value to our Universe and deserves survival. Think our "Shambala" Island has been repeatedly visited by many since ancient times as the experimental test chamber, perhaps Petri dish to attempt to successfully evolve humanity to prove value to achieve survival.

SOooo, perhaps the changing behaviours of our key characters, such as Jack recently becoming compliant and Locke as you already observed for us, involve Jacob & MIB replacing the current Locke with a modified Locke from a parallel time segment.

Whew, am ready for our mid-August, 2-week Jersey family/friends visit to help clear my LOST mind ... lol.

Namaste - RichPundit

I also had thought about this, what I think is.

Someone uses smokey to monitor people without them knowing. So for example, Locke decides to go hunt for bores alone deep in the jungle. Smokey tails locke and communicates with its master that Locke is way far away and no one else is near him.

Now the fake Locke can move in and carefully maniuplate things, say oh I dunno maybe sit down with Walt and play a few games of backgammon and tell some secrets.

Or maybe find Jack running wildy through the jungle who then fell of a cliff, and miracolously Locke just happens to be right there at the right exact time to do save him.

sometimes locke seemed to be "zen master locke" and just know exactly what to do and how to act, then other times he was "whiney locke" not really knowing what to do, but knowing he needs to do something.

etc....

for this matter it could be done with anyone, have smokey tail anyone and then mimic that person for whatever purpose.

heck maybe thats why smokey was trying to pull locke down into that hole, that way he could be removed from the "game" early on and replaced.

I think there are two lockes throughout the whole season, it just took until season 5 for "myster person" to actually trick locke into getting killed.

I can't buy into this one. Locke learned to hunt from his father, of all people. He improved his skills and became more spiritual when he joined a commune, where he learned about hallucinogenic drugs and sweat lodges.

Locke always felt he had a destiny. The miracle he experienced upon crashing on the island reinforced this belief, which lead to him excepting the role as the Other's leader. Unfortunately, Locke was just being used - I think by both MIB and Jacob.

In the first season, I think Smokey/MIB was just scoping him out, deciding if he was the one that Jacob had earmarked for leadership. There's probably a new leader with every group that Jacob brings to the island. I believe Smokey scanned Eko and let him live (the first time) because he thought he could be the One. When he refused to repent, this was a sign that he was not the One. In the past, Smokey probably searched for the One for the purpose of killing him/her. But this time around, Smokey had a different plan.

The question in my mind is whether Jacob knew this and fed Locke to him, with a plan of his own. I would love it if that plan involved bringing Locke back.

g8rfan, i completely agree. Before Locke was put into the wheelchair, he had learned to hunt and track from his father, so that explains his knowledge of navigating the jungle. Plus what g8rfan mentioned about lockes life in the hippy camp would explain his spiritual side, not to mention people telling him his whole life that he is special.

I also agree on the point that smokey was checking him out, to see if he would be 'usable'. This, i feel is one the most tragic points in the show. Smokey scans him in 'walkabout', learning about who he essentially is, a broken man who is desperatley searching for a purpose. The perfect pawn.
