I actually took Ben's flat-out no to mean "No, because it was just a metaphore."

I agree that the "magic box" is just a metaphor, when Locke asks Ben about it, there's a moment where Ben stares at Lock uncomprehendingly, before answering with suppressed annoyance that it is not. Add in that when Ben is telling Locke about the magic box, Ben is actively resisting Locke's replacing him as leader of the Others, and trying to destroy his credibility in the eyes of those who would follow him, Other or plane survivor. Locke running around asking about some "magic box" would definitely accomplish that.

Actually, I kind of figured Kate must own the 'magic box' the way she has Jack, Sawyer and even Hurley sniffing around her like a dog in heat. Check Hurley out at his 'Welcome Home' Party after he kisses her on the cheek, and then tastes his lips to see how well it truly was. lol Go dude, go!
