Maybe the Lost writers are playing with the old idea, having Alpert and Abaddon working as sort of the hands of fate?

As far as Ben knowing, he did not seem shocked in the episode where Juliet tells him a spinal surgeon was one of the survivors of the crash. This was conveniently shortly after he found out he had a tumor, but when Juliet tells him the good news of Jack being there, Ben doesn't bat an eye. Maybe he didn't know everyone who would be on 815, but I'd say Jacob or whoever promised him that Jack (or some other doctor) would be brought to help him.
yeah, good thought on Alpert and Abaddon maybe doing course correcting. Maybe that ties into the jewelry store lady???

There's lots of inference that this was expected to a degree. When they saw the crash they had a plan. Would love to know if they had the character files pre-crash

and based on Ben's instruction to Patchy, when Ben took Juliette to Flame, they did not have the files beforehand.

Ben instructs patchy to get files on every single passenger. Patchy replies " I am already working on it"

Oooo could be. In mythology, there were always 3 Fates. They were usually all women, but who cares haha. One was the fate of starting life (Clotho in Greek, Nona in roman signifying the 9th month of pregnancy)...the other the fate of duration of life (Lachesis in Greek, Decima (tenth) in Roman)...the last the fate of ending life (Atropos in Greek, Morta (death) in Roman). Alpert shows up at Locke's birth...Abaddon guides him during his life...perhaps we have already seen Atropos...Morta...in the smoke Monster. Morta the Fate chose not only WHEN a person died, but how. We have seen Smokey make these calls.

They are like the 3 witches in MacBeth, or any tales about the 3 Weird sisters.
