If Sun is one of the Oceanic 6 and Jin stayed behind or gave up his spot...The obviously everyone back home would believe that Jin passed away when the plane crashed. This would explain the date on his tombstone

In response to the possibility of Claire's death contradicting with Desmond's flashes: Desmond had many visions of Charlie dying, but he interfered and saved Charlie (the lightning, drowning, the booby trap in the jungle). Although Charlie died eventually, also foreseen by Desmond, his visions are a possible future. Charlie's death led to some people getting rescued, but there are too many variables involved to say for sure that Claire and Aaron got on the helicoptor just because Desmond saw that in his vision. It would have been nice to see Claire grieving for Charlie, but it's too late now.

Desmond never said that Claire AND Aaron will get on the helicopter. And technically if she gets on a helicopter at the end of the series Desmond's premonition will come true. I think for some reason Claire will have to stay on the island and have to make the ultimate sacrifice. Saying goodbye to her son.

I agree with much of this. I am with meimei though about Claire - wouldn't Kate have Aaron call her Auntie instead of Mommy if there was hope that Claire is alive? I think that Claire will likely die. But Jin will make Sun go to save the baby and herself. I would cry too if I had just given birth and knew my husband was alive but unreachable. The grave is that reminder that Sun can't have the family she longs for, together. Interesting point about the timeline. By the time they go back, Sun and Jin's Baby will be old enough for Sun to leave while she goes on the rescue mission - same with Aaron. Presumably when they DO go back to save the rest of the gang, the women will not stay behind just because they are mummies.

Part of Kate\\\\\\'s deal was she was she could not travel (why would that be added if it didn\\\\\\'t have something to do with a future event?), which to me opens up the possibility that she and the other five will figure out a way to go back and retrieve those who couldn\\\\\\'t leave the island.

HefDeezy--You and I are on the same page, I've been thinking the same thing. However, think about this: what if the people weren't chosen to leave, they were chosen to stay? This means that Jin and Claire were chosen to remain on the island not that Jack and Kate were chosen to leave. Maybe those who stayed were chosen to protect the island. But actually, I think that Claire is definitely dead. The writers probably haven't decided if Jin is alive or not. They worded Sun's conversation with the tombstone pretty ambiguously. Seriously, they make up so much as they go along. But knowing how this show loves killing major characters, they're both going to end up dead anyway, I have no hope.

According to the rest of the world, Claire is death. I suspect that the story will be that Claire was one of the original 8 survivors but did not not survive childbirth and gave Aaron to Kate to raise as her own. In such a case, the people involved may wish to treat it like an adoption--in which case the adopted children call their parents Mom and Dad.

No - I know that lostgrrl (about adopted children, etc). What I mean is, if KATE knows Claire is actually on the Island and alive....I am not sure, even if she were POSITIVE she would never see Claire again, or Aaron for that matter, that she would have him call her mommy. I think there would be a moral barometer there. Something that would prevent her from feeling okay with being his mother. But she is okay with it - happy even - so I DO think Claire is dead.
