| I believe that Ben was in the coffin. The name in the newspaper read Jeremy Bentham because that Ben assumed this name after returning to the mainland. This explains why... 1 - Jack wants to kill himself - Ben knows the most about returning to the island thus is the only person left who could bring him back there. 2 - Jack tells the man at the funeral that the person in the coffin was neither friend nor family. 3 - Kate acts repulsed when Jack asks her why she wasnt at the funeral. Wikipedia the name Jeremy Bentham - Jeremy Bentham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia After reading the description you can see why the name would appeal to Ben. Let me know what you think... xo Jonah |

| Oooh interesting. I was originally thinking Locke and then Sawyer, but that's interesting. Anyone have a screen cap of the newspaper?

| where did you get that name? was there a time to read it?? I never caught it based on that fact I concur that it may very well be Ben. no one showed up- Who would have known him?? I liked this about whoevers namesake: (from Jeremy Bentham-Wiki-) His hobbies included the study of time travel.

| If it was Ben, maybe the cancer came back with a vengance since Ben left the island. Ben choose to kill himself rather than suffer through the illness. |

| We all know "John Locke" was a philosopher. "Jeremy Bentham" was also a philosopher who shared CONFLICTING views and concepts! In fact, much of their work is close enough that they're referenced in each other's biographies. Here's a google search for "john locke" AND "jeremy bentham" Interesting, I think. |

| The popular theory about the name on the news clipping is that it says Jeremy Bentham a name Ben would very possibly like to assume upon returning to the states. Bentham was a child prodigy who grew up to be an early advocate of utilitarianism. Influences of Jeremy Bentham include John Locke and David Hume. Jeremy Bentham also was the inventor of the Panopticon - a prison that would allow an observer to observe all prisoners without the prisoners being able to tell if they are being observed or not, thus conveying a "sentiment of an invisible omniscience." This ties in to several elements of his role on the island as well as his desire to allow his people to think they could leave at any time, not knowing they were his prisoners. xo Jonah Jeremy Bentham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
