This theory has come about by listening to other peoples discussions and just thinking about other peoples questions and this is the theory that I have come up with. Its long but bare with me, I think it makes a lot of sense. I'll start chronologically. The basis of this theory is that there is some kind of mystical and powerful force embodied in the island or which exists on the island. The island is in fact a gateway to the underworld. A portal to the afterlife. Not purgatory but instead the place where the underworld and this earth meets. This island has existed for ever and was not man made. Some time in ancient history an ancient sea faring civilization fates upon the island. Maybe it is the Phoenecians, maybe it is the Egyptians, maybe it is some Pacific Island civilization. These people discover the properties of the island and worship it because of its awesome power and mystical qualities. One of the mystical disturbances on the island that they discover is The Black Smoke. This ancient civilization crafts shrines and such across the island and even goes so far as to build a giant statue of a god which represents to them the power of the island. As time goes on these people eventually die out as they lose their connection to their civilization. For the next several hundred years no one stumbles upon the island and if they did they didn't do anything of consequence until roughly 1600-1700 A.D. At this point in time the pirate ship, The Black Rock, a slave ship, fates upon the island. The captain of this ship is the one and only Magnus Hanso. Magnus is the son in some important family and the news of his disappearance causes his family to fall into ruin and the mysteriousness of it creates an obsession of finding it by the male heirs of the family. During WW2 one heir of the family, Alvar Hanso, finds the island, explores it and discovers that this is where his grandfather disappeared. Alvar discovers that there is clearly something different about this island and he sets up the Hanso Foundation to create an organization to study the island. During the Cold War, after the discovery of the Valenzetti equation, an equation which will predict the end of the world, the Hanso Foundation is contacted by the nations of the world to study the equation and find a way to stop the end of the world from occuring. Alvar knows the perfect place to study this phenomenon and thus the Dharma Initiative is created. They set up bases on the island and begin their project. Their plan was to study the Black Smoke and the other abilities of the island and figure out how to use the different qualities to save the world. Incidently due to the nature of the island they call the Black Smoke Cerberus because it is quite literally the guardian of the underworld. At one point someone comes up with a plan and they try it out. However it fails miserably and they anger the island and the Black Smoke which kills many of them and destroys the Dharma Initiative. (For those who followed the Lost Experience this would be when Alvar loses control to Mittlewerk.) Most of the Dharma people decide to leave, however, a select few stay and try and finish their work. These people eventually became so obsessed with their project that they are willing to do anything to complete their task. During this time Rousseau's ship crashes and the Others perform experiments on her crew and on her and they kidnap her child. It is at this point in our story when the fateful plane crash occurs. The plane passengers crash on the island and the others quickly leap into action to find out about their unexpected guests. The tailies are attacked early due to their closeness to the others and the fact that they are in some sort of protected territory which cannot be accessed by Cerberus. The Losties soon discover the Black Smoke, Cerberus and discover the Swan hatch. The others seek to learn about them because they wish to use them for experiments and to make them join their cause. That is the timeline of my theory and now I shall answer some unanswered questions. 1. How did the plane crash? The EM pulse which was released by Desmond disrupted all of the flights electronic equipment and caused it to crash. 2. Is their an EM shield which protects the island from discovery? No the island is in fact protected by its own mysteriousness. Its the same reason Avalon is undiscoverable. It is protected by its closeness to the underworld. The EM pulse given out at the end of Season Two allowed Penny to find the island because now she had a reading to discover. 3. What is the Black Smoke? The Black Smoke, or Cerberus, is in fact a collection of the souls of those who have died or who have their bodies on the island. This is why Jack saw his father. His father's spirit is located on the island and is trying to show him something. This is also why the first time Locke saw Cerberus he said he saw the soul of the island. He saw its history, or glimses of it, and he saw the true power of it. Later on when he saw it he was taken either because he had not discovered the Pearl when he was supposed to, or because he was ready for the next step of his spirit quest, or because the spirit of Boone was angry. This also explains why Eko saw pictures of his life and that of Yemis. Locke was able to see Yemi in "?" because Yemi's body is on the island and he was trying to help Eko find the "?" because Locke had failed his spirit quest. 4. What is the deal with Locke and his mysticism? Locke had been chosen by the island as the next spirit leader. Locke was supposed to become pervue to the secrets of the Island and all of its power and history. Locke was tested by sending him visions from which he was supposed to find the Swan Hatch and the Pearl. The island wants Locke to rid the island of the others and the destruction they have caused to it. They sent him the vision of Yemi's plane crashing which should have led him to the Pearl. However, Locke failed and because he did the island demanded the sacrifice of Boone. When Eko found Locke the island decided to use Eko to help Locke find his faith again. The island needed to test Locke by challenging his faith in the island and this test happens inside the Pearl and instead of succeeding Locke fails. Locke is unable to believe and Eko becomes the new candidate. My prediction is however, that Locke will eventually regain his role now that his faith should be restored. The whole story of the show is science/faith and this theory best holds to that description. I know not everything has a scientific explanation however, I do not believe that everything will. I know that people say that the producers said there would be however that is not true. They said they knew the answers to all the questions and that everything would be explained and that everything would fit together. Tell me what you think of this theory and if you notice any holes. If you do I will try and patch them up.

I remebered that their was one question I forgot to answer and that was why would the mystical guides, Eko and Locke, feel drawn to push the button in the Swan Station and is the Swan station really connected to the mystical power of the island? The answer to this is yes. Somehow a terrible disease is released amongst the Dharma Intiative, however the healing power of the island prevents them from dying immediately and instead causes them to slowly die. Before they were wiped out the Dharma Initiative created the Swan hatch which amplified the Healing Power with Electromagnetic Energy and caused the island to stop the disease all together. This explains why the healing power is so great that it can cure paralysis and cancer. Now that the hatch has been destroyed the healing power will retract to a smaller ammount and Locke will slowly lose the use of his legs. Rose will notice a resurgence of her cancer and the disease will once again begin to kill. Those who have taken the vaccine, Charlie, Claire, and Aaron will be safe and this will cause the Losties to notice this and start taking the vaccine. I would also assume due to the Blast Door Map that the vaccine has some sort of crazy side effect.

Oh and one more thing I wanted to mention. I think time does work differently on the island. Since the island is so close to the underworld I think time seems to pass very slowly. Sort of like Lothlorien in Lord of the Rings, the island seems to preserve and remain the same. All natural processes take longer than normal. If this is true then I would also say that Adam and Eve may have been remenants of the ancient civilization. This is something Im not as sure about. However it remains a definant possibility. I would also claim that the song which Sayid and Hurley heard on the radio, which was the same song Jack heard on the radio on the mainland, was actually broadcasted at the same time. The reason I think this is due to Sayid's comment, in reference to Hurleys belief that the signal was from the island, that the signal could have been coming from anywhere in the world. And then Hurley said "or when..." This seemed like a strange comment and then it resurfaced in the season three review episode which seemed to confirm its importance. Im not as sure about this one and I wouldnt be surprised if this was not true and this is the most likely to not be true. But I think it fits with the rest of the theory.

I'm unsure that your description of time passing more slowly could explain how Ben was able to show Jack on the TV the events that had passed since their crashing on the island. The re-election of George W Bush, The Redsox winning the World Series etc. Any thoughts?

The time thing is sort of fuzzy which is why I hesitate to include it in the theory, I would call it a possibility. My idea of time on the island, as I said, is like Lothlorien in Lord of the Rings. time appears to pass slowly but in fact it is at the same rate. For instance when Jack and the Losties enter the island they don't revert to an earlier time they just become a part of this new time frame which allows things to preserve. So if someone in the real world brought in a tape the tape wouldn't revert it would simply show things which havent yet occured in respect to island time. ITs a bit confusing. Its got a lot to do with relativity but the best description I can think of is that it is like Lothlorien and how the rings of power allowed the wielder to preserve their country. read Lord of the Rings.
