| The Swan Station was apparently built in order to hide a major accident that perhaps the original Dharma people created. The accident created an electromagnetic field of such magnitude that the only way to manage it is to discharge the build up every 108 minutes before it gets too big, thus the system of pushing the button was created. If the electomagnetic field gets too big, it sucks everything in, much like a black hole. Pushing the button every 108 minutes is literally saving the world (or the particular world of the island). It has also been mentioned that Amelia Earhart might be the old woman in the book club that knocks on the door to Juliette's house. The common thread through the show is how people got to the island: usually by plane crash, balloon crash, or ship wreck. This reminds me of the Burmuda Triangle effect. I wonder if the island is some sort of portal or time warp area? ALso, on the Season 2 extras bonus material on the dvd, there is a segment where Carlton is explaining the phenomenon of "Six Degrees of Separation", which is that you are connected to at least six other random people in the world through coincidence, paths crossing, or relationships. Nothing is really a coincidence, but designed by some intelligence. Putting these three concepts together, I think LOST is exploring the idea of some sort of portal in our world that leads us to another world (ala "somewhere over the rainbow") where we (the characters on the show) are forced to confront the relationships of random people who are in our lives for a reason. The Dharma Initiative may have been studying this very effect, trying to understand it, and have somehow harnessed the portal into the other world, and control it via the Swan Station. What do you guys think? |

| Who's that guy? I'm new to this board so I don't know whats the latest. I don't know who that old woman is, but I do think there are interesting things going on with the hatches, electromagnetism, and experiments with time, the weather, and altering the parameters of the equation. |

Interesting theory. What exactly do you mean when you say 'some sort of material' and why would the generators have to generate a field larger than was necessary because of this? | |
