Another interesting piece is where all the numbers show up.

Pretty sure you heard wrong.

There was a story that the numbers corresponded to those of a couple Yankee greats with some second stringers though.

I wouldn't put much stock in it as somehow Damon would have purposefully left off the Babe along with other notables that any sane person would have picked over someone like Whitey Herzog(if I remember that proper).

The fact is.. they could have picked any 6 numbers really and they would have corresponded to some famous Yankee or another.

true, but i'm wondering why the first four? 23 comes from r.a.wilson's illuminatus books, and 42 from douglas addams hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy series. any ideas or info about the inspiration for the other four?
