Better than I could ever do. Nice work. There is a spoiler script page out there that explains in small detail what the monster is. If you read the side comments it gives you a name of the beast and from there wikipedia is your friend.

Here's the Wikipedia entry for that creature. There's a paragraph about it's relationship to Lost at the bottom. Those scripts are mostly red herrings. The monster in the script is supposed to be like a sloth. Yeah, a *HUGE* sloth might knock trees around, as seen in season 1 from the beach, but it wouldn't race through the jungle and it wouldn't smoke.

on the blast map, it says (in latin) "there are dragons here." does this mean the monster is a dragon, or is it a metaphor for the others?

Here be dragons is an old map warning of dangerous areas. They didn't think there were dragons or any other kind of monster. the Dragon mentioned on the map could be anything. like quicksand.

I think that the beast is some sort of trans-dimensional creature that is being pinned to the island by some time of machinery/magnets that run on a track of sorts below certain portions of the island. Why else would you hear the gears grinding and metal clanking whenever the Losties encounter the beast?
