Like Doc says, the term "jumping the shark" is an overused one. And, IMO, definitely misused in the case of LOST. I don't really see how anyone could think that about the show. I mean, if there comes a time when the producers stop giving us questions and start going through the motions in order to preserve ratings then it would be deserved. If there was a low point to the season, it's probably the fact that it's over and we have to wait all summer for its return.
I'll admit, I'm a huge fan of the show. That probably gives me a bias when I read negative comments about it. But I, for one, love the fact that each episode teases me with new questions, new possibilities as to what's really going on, on the island. I've never had a tv show hold my attention in the way that LOST does. Well, maybe Hockey Night in Canada during the playoffs (Lord Stanley's Cup-Canada's national treasure-is coming home this year, btw)-LOL. But seriously, LOST has it all-a great storyline with great writing that actually makes people think when they watch it. How many other shows can you say that about? I agree with Doc and River that maybe those who are saying that LOST jumped the shark might be misinterpreting the meaning of the phrase. I just think Doc said it a whole lot better. So yeah, if I misinterpreted what you said, River, i gotta apologize. That said, if someone doesn't like the show, I totally respect that opinion. It's your loss as far as I'm concerned. But hey, you can always watch Friends in syndication. LOL.
No worries, it happens. There Are more insulting posts around here than there used to be. Comes with higher traffic unfortunately...

But, if you notice one that is being directly rude to a poster just click the exclamation point "!" on the left side of their post and the first mod to get the notification will take care of it. Those types of posts bother me as well.

What I was Referring to my post is the way some people are saying that Lost jumped the shark in the finale... there was nothing in it that resembled "shark jumping". And Lost is still popular. I just think that if those people understood what it really means then it wouldn't be misused.

Default Jumping the Shark

I didnt know that until i read Doc's article. So I had to check for it, and found the answer in no other place than Wikipedia.

So... i'm still hopin (as i first posted) that the Challah is somethin happening in the island, not somewhere else in the world. I mean, those two guys sorrounded by snow are in the weather project area of the island (upper-right on the blast door map). And... why shall we think that Penny is in the "real world"? we only see her in her bed -- without any real context.

Great article, Doc. And great 2nd season finale.

Not that I take any offense to the comment, but there is hardly a more vocal fan of LOST. Amongst my slams... S.O.S, Collision, What Kate Did, Dave... the list goes on. I'm not beyond hightlighting a bad job at all.

You seem to know the website business quite well, so I'm surprised you missed the part that controversy drives numbers. If I really wanted to drive traffic I'd publish a big expose on how much the finale sucked.
doing that would probably give you a traffic boost but it would be short lived.

You'd potentially lose traffic from the fanboys. Those are the bread and butter my man, the ones who'll return again and again You wouldn't necessarily be viewed as a fansite anymore.

Maintaining traffic on a site like this does allow you to sometimes lash out at individual bad episodes. Episodes that occur during a season are easy targets because even the most rabid fanboy can read a negative review and think "Well at least there's a new episode next week"

However something as large and meaningful as a season finale has much greater impact than a single cog in the machine such as an episode.

I like your site, keep up the good work.

Thanks! Just know that I mean what I say. If LOST ever does "Jump The Shark", I'll be the first to stop supporting it. But I don't see that coming.
